Sent GF to Fry's for a 5930k, got a 5960x. Can my MB supply enough juice to OC?

As the thread title states, I sent my GF to Fry's to grab a 5930k on sale yesterday but since they were sold out minutes before she got there, she bought a 5960x instead.

I had ordered an ASUS X99-a/USB 3.1, and it's only got one 8-pin CPU power connector. I was reading on one review site that their 5960x, when heavily overclocked, could draw up to 300 watts. That's a bit more than I anticipated from the 5930k I planned to get, and I'm really worried the motherboard won't be able to supply that with just one 8-pin.

Do you think it could cause a problem, or is there nothing for me to worry about? I plan to overclock a reasonable amount, depending on how well the chip performs. I'm just concerned the motherboard I specced isn't up to par for the behemoth 8 core chip I ended up with.

Nice up grade if it wouldn't run it, it wouldn't fit it. You wont be doing much without a nice aftermarket cooler though.............

I think it's your PS that matters. The single 8 pin connector can theoretically deliver 336 watts.

The board supports the chip, and is touted as an overclocking board, so I think you will be fine.

Perfect, I wasn't sure what the spec was for that 8-pin, and I was thinking it would be similar to the GPU 8-pin that's only rated for 150 watts. I've got a Seasonic made eVGA 1000 PS that will have no problem.

She decided she would pay the difference out of her pocket. I do buy stuff and do her favors all the time, so she said she's paying me back for some of that.

I know there's not an issue with compatibility, just worried about power delivery. I've got an H90 140mm AiO, so I think it will be fine for now. I might have to upgrade to something a little bigger though.

Main thing I guess is if you want to test with AVX 2 (which wants lots of power)

I don't think I use any software that makes use of avx 2, so I just stresstested with prime 27.7 (that only has avx 1), and after the testing I tuned the current and power limiters in the bios so it doesn't throttle at all in cinebench, but does throttle with avx, so my board and cpu don't melt when I occasionaly do a video transcode, or accidently start something else with avx2.

But if you want to overclock for the best video transcoding performance I guess you have to test with avx 2, which might limit your overclock if the board and cooling are not up to the job.
