Not to drag this too far off topic, but is it? Obviously it works, but I've always taken the silly 100W power consumption of the top Llano part to be a sign that it still has issues.

AMD didn't tweak desktop Llano for moderate power usage under load. They're running more voltage than is necessary.

Yeah I am still trying to figure that one out...why on earth would you not take power usage into consideration...this is probably the reason we haven't seen many smaller laptops out yet with llano

People don't understand how chip companies bin and spec processors, that is the bottom line issue with these "zomg I can undervolt my llano like mad!" reports.

When AMD sells a chip it has certain specs it must be able to operate at. One of those specs being it's rated clockspeed at its rated maximum operating temperature.

Just because I can take my CPU's voltage down to 1.1V from its stock 1.3V doesn't mean the CPU will actually function on 1.1V if I allow it to heat up to the max allowed temp for the CPU per the spec.

There's a difference.

FX-8120 is rumored to be priced below 2500k.

15 pages in this thread and people still dismiss IPC and believe an 8 core CPU is going to have the same IPC as Intel's 4 core chip? Sign me up for a "free" 100% performance increase for less $$ .....Oh boy, I can already see the headlines: "AMD delivers an 8-core Bulldozer [Sandy Bridge] processor, with 5.0ghz overclocking headroom on air, for $205!"

An 8-core SB-IPC BD CPU with 5.0ghz+ overclocking would mop the floor with $999 SB-E in about 2 seconds. <Did I mention, for $205 only!?>

Right, people still take this seriously? :whiste:

Love the title for the zdnet article"New AMD Bulldozer release date rumored to be October 12"

Beautiful we just need more pipe dreams for people to make one more thread just like this one that gets no one no where you just wait and see:whiste:

At least we know, September 22nd-23rd didn't happen. You guys can enjoy the weekend now since AMD won't launch it on Saturday or Sunday.

This forum is great: full of competent people... more more than me. Many work in this industry and are used to consider statistics and data. All here consider things and debate in the same way. But in my opinion everything must be seen in the right contest. Sure things aren't going like we hoped but if we want be rational we must consider the times we live in (hard times). Here for sure there isn't only the usual crystalball's thing. All companies in many places have their troubles in theese days... troubles of all type that we rightly don't know. And all you know that For sure AMD is working hard... it's their interest. I think we'll have something good.
Marketing is not a demon, it can be nice, it can be original, it can be interesting and it can be nothing of special but in the end it reminds us why we are here. We have passions: someone loves AMD, someone Intel, someone NVIDIA, someone IT, all of us love something and marketing keep this site LIVE like all the web and everything else.

But let's be realistic here.

What you are *hoping* for is:

- Higher overclocking than Intel = 5.0ghz+
- At least as good power consumption
- At least as good IPC (so 1 BD core = 1 SB core)
- Cheaper
- 2x the cores

That's not being "optimistic" because there isn't a single compromise accepted in such a scenario. That's being unrealistic.

AMD has not made a better performance processor since 2006. And yet suddenly they are going to release a $205 8 core processor, nearly 2x faster than a 2500k and faster than Intel's $999 SB-E top of the line CPU? And Intel is rumored to release a $340-350 i7-2700k with just a 100mhz clock speed boost? BD should be better than Phenom II X6, but there is no way AMD is going to sell you a $205 processor that beats Intel's $1000 one.

You can bet Intel already knows how BD performs on the latest stepping as well. The fact that Intel is releasing a 2700K with only a minimal boost in clock speed leads me to believe that BD, at most, equals the 2600K in a few benches and only a small boost in clock will push the i7 clearly out in front.

BD should be better than Phenom II X6, but there is no way AMD is going to sell you a $205 processor that beats Intel's $1000 one.

People have remarkably short memories. I remember AMD chips around the $1000 mark when they were at the top. If they truly had a chip that was at the top, they would price it accordingly. Maybe not at $1000, but $800 or $900 for sure.

AMD has been a non-profit organization for so long that people think its more of a lifestyle choice on AMD's behalf rather than a no-other-choice type situation

Yeah, I'm sure AMD has a 980X barn burner on its hands and yet it wants to sell them for a mere $200 :hmm:

AMD is the new UNICEF, the world's largest charity CPU business.

Sigh...the parallels between bulldozer's release and that of Barcelona/Phenom are just way to dejavu at this point, right down to the marketing spin.

Zambezi is shaping up to be Phenom Part Deux does lipstick make for a good TIM

Marketing spin? From who? 99% of the info/"leaks" about Bulldozer have not been from AMD at all.

Probably the most notable "spin" that is more or less official is the "native 8-core" marketing message.

Pretty silly message if it truly ends up losing to the QC 2600K. But other than that you are correct, AMD has not really hyped Bulldozer at all. We've all hyped it up ourselves.
