Movie wasnt that great imo. Ive had the dvd for a month or so now. After watching it I learned it was based off a tv series I guess? Well, the movie was entertaining but nothing Id say that was just incredible or anything. So it makes sense why it didnt do that well in theaters. I wouldnt have gone to see it either.....

pretty much. its not that great. it just has a rather rabid cult fan base is all. they couldn't muster the audience to save the mediocre tv show, let alone open the movie to respectable numbers. it actually dropped each day of release

HAD a rabid cult fan base. The movie alienated much of that fan base, me included.

IMHO I disagree. I think it was Weadon's flawed attempt to revive the series. Alienated me? ..no. Disappointment to us all? ..yes!

Most people I know personally who saw the movie felt it was damn near perfect. I thought it was awesome and the best possible ending to the series.

It was supposed to be a full series. For some reason, the studio decided to show the episodes out of order, then, after it was cancelled, showed the 2 hour pilot as the finale. The episodes are all in order on the DVD, which makes them make a lot more sense and flow much more smoothly than they did originally.

Actually, many Browncoats were pissed about the way the movie stabbed them in the back. Suffice it to say if you liked the original episodes, there is a good chance you will not like the movie. The movie is for Weadon fans, not Firefly fans.

How so? I liked the series and the movie... a lot.

I liked the subtlety of the original episodes that was lost in the bigger-is-better hollywoodization of the series. Another big point of contention dealt with killing off main characters and whether it served the story. (I and several of my local browncoat friends thought they did not.)

I wrote a review on the browncoat site, and the most common response was along the lines of 'Well, that is the way Whedon does things, you should know that from Buffy and Angel.' I was never a viewer on either of these, as their marketing identified them to me as adolescent fare. But long story short, my crew and I thought the movie sucked and we no longer consider ourselves browncoats.

I felt the same way at first, however if you consider this the "final episode" it makes for a good ending. You can kill off the whole cast for all I care as long as it brings some closure to the story. I hate TV shows that end with out tying up loose ends.

I'm sure many of the "brown coats" want this to go on forever, but if this turns out to be the last movie at least it wraps up the story and the characters from the TV show pretty good.

I've never seen the series but thought this was the best sci-fi movie since the original Matrix. I thought it was very well done. Saw it for a second time recently and it still held up.

I never watched the series but watched the movie after reading some good reviews. It's a great movie, with interesting characters and an interesting universe. Some of it is somewhat cliched but I liked the movie enough to rent the TV series DVD. I just finished the first 2 episodes and it does somewhat flesh out the characters a bit, but I don't think watching the tv series is necessary to enjoy the movie.

I was looking for the "deal" when I clicked on this thread, so if you shop offline
Evolution Cd's & DVD's, buy-trade-sell in Central Florida has the best deal on new
releases and will probably have a better price than the online prices for this movie!

Joss Whedan's ability to take cartoon like characters and turn "them" into believable
humans has been manifesting itself since Buffy...the nuances of his writing are not
brilliant, but do appeal to human fraility in a manner rarely seen on TV.

Translation: He creates some really kick-ass female characters who wouldn't put
up with some of the threads in some of the other Categories at this website.
Warning! There are women like this in real life.

Although I really am pro men, if Gina Torres wasn't like this in real life I would be
greatly disappointed!

The movie got an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 87% from the Cream of the Crop critics, most of whom had never seen the series. It also has the 5th highest reader rating ever on Boxofficemojo:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/grades/?page=usergrades&p=.htm

So it was very well-received on its own as a movie. Industry insiders pretty much agree that it wasn't the quality of the film itself, it was the piss poor marketing campaign that Universal ran. People who hadn't seen the series had no idea what it was about, or even that it was coming out. The posters were horsesh*t, and none of the cast members made the talk show rounds. The Universal marketing dept. blew it big time on this one.

insiders? hah, sorry, the film had the advantage of having a dvd tv series set out for several years before release with uberfans pushing it on everyone they could get their hands on. that an advantage most films will never get, let alone the early sneak previews for fans to get them riled up. it just didn't matter since there was no star power in the cast at all, and the whole concept couldn't be sold as anything more than a cheap translation of a cheap tv scifi series. even the uberfans couldn't bring in a decent showing on opening, it had no hope regardless of sales campaigns. i know the fans want there to be a conspiracy but there isn't, the studios aren't into losing money on purpose.

as for online ratings, the fans have been on a strange campaign of flooding sites with positive reviews all out of proportion with anything really. they voted it into the top 10 movies of all time during its release on yahoo movies for instance. sorry its just not that good. the fans are just that rabid is all. the film maybe better than the series, but i think thats just another reason it bombed. the series stunk, and i bet half the people who took at chance on it because of all the excessive hype just got turned off to the whole thing.

1. The Cream of the Crop critics on Rotten Tomatoes are not uberfans. Virtually none of them had ever seen the series. 87% of them gave it a positive review based purely on its qualities as a stand alone piece.

2. The Firefly DVD set is currently the #3 top selling DVD on Amazon (not just among DVD sets, but among all DVDs). This is for an item that was released over 2 years ago and still sells for about 30 bucks. The uberfans made their purchases a long time ago, so a lot of people other than the uberfans apparently don't believe the series stunk.

you see, you shouldn't base general popularity on amazon ranks. it is a tiny segment of the market. in rental/dvd sales serenity is doing as bad as the films original release. the simple fact is after years of building a fan base the movie still bombed. all the firefly dvds supposedly sold through amazon did not translate into massive goodwill towards the film. it should tell you something after a while. you can see the effort to distort reality here http://www.fireflyfans.net/amazon.asp

edit, sales chart for this week http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/charts/chart_display.jsp?g=Videos&f=Top+DVD+Sales
no serenity in the top 10 at all

It might be a small part of overall sales, but Amazon's rankings still show that people are still buying the set years after it was released. And it's not just the uberfans anymore, contrary to your own conspiracy theory.

How exactly does a link to the Amazon page for the Firefly DVD set "distort reality"? To affect the amazon sales rank the set has to be purchased. I'd have to agree that you seem to be the one with the conspiracy theories and too much time on your hands since you're busy posting in deal threads that obviously are of no interest to you.
