All the new Maxtor's are crap. I think a lot of people know this because of the warranty drop from 3 years to 1. I actually know someone who works for Maxtor, and admitted that the component quality dropped around the same time. Stick with WD, or even better Seagate.

I just bought two DiamondMax 10 250gb 7200rpm 16mb SATA drives and they carry a 3 year warranty.

I guess you are right to a certain extent, but different models get different warranties.

For me, Maxtor's are the best. I only buy Maxtor's and the occasional Seagate. Bought probably 75+ Maxtor's over the last 6-7 years for all the computers I've built, and NOT ONE has failed. Only their retail hard drives have a one year warranty. If you want three year warranty, buy the drive OEM from Newegg. If they are crap why do they warranty the OEM drives for three years? The Maxline II and III line have a 5 year warranty. WD also has one year retail warranty for IDE drives.

Rasputin, thanks for the work you put into this and the extra tid-bits by others is also acknowledged.

Seagate must be doing something right as their market-share went up by a couple two-three percent this quarter. I'm guessing the five-year warrantee had something to do with it.
I also saw where Maxtor's had some moving and housekeeping pains. I certainly hope Maxtor no longer has any bricks in their inventory.

It used to be that the OEM warranties were shorter term than the retail. I guess that was changed cause the OEM builders tend to notice the warranty duration whereas the typical consumer will overlook it.

Beware of TigerDirect... I ordered an LCD from them. The first time it declined my card so I used a different one that was accepted. Of course I got 2 LCD's. Then I followed the rebate instructions "to the T" and was denied. The rebate went to OnRebate.com - not sure if the 2 sites are related.

Not trying to thread crap - just a warning. My advice - stay away.
