Serial ATA much faster than Normal ATA?

I do mostly video encoding with a regular ATA configuration. I have an "old" WD1600JB 8MB western digital 7200 RPM 160GB HD that the videos are written to/from.

Would I see any performance increase by switching to a serial interface? I use an AMD 2100+ with 768MB ram...

Thanks all

You won'y see much of a diffrence unless it a high end high RPM drive like a Western Digital Raptor 10k. If you trust WD (I don't, at work we have 58 that died within a year) then those drives will give you pretty good encoding performance. You will probably want two of them in a RAID O config. Keep the 160 gb drive as backup for completed videos.

Heh, actually I had to RMA 2 of these 160GB drives before this one. But, this one has been goin for 2 years now, so I trust it now.

As far as raid0, I'm just wondering if the HD would perform any better that would increase my video encoding at all, but cpu encoding is really slow on videos, it writes at like 200KB/sec tops, so its more the CPU.

I have two drives - exactly the same except one is SATA and the other standard IDE - both 7200 rpm. No really noticeable difference in everyday usage - benchmarks might show a difference - but it is real work that counts.

Never 'trust' a hard drive. Be prepared to lose all the data on it at any time. Now that your drive has run for two years, it only means its getting closer to its impending fate in the trash bin.

harddrive is like a car, if you use it often it will break down faster then if it is left to sit stil and rust
after 2years it should make quite a bit of noise not to mention quite rusty as is..
invest in a new hd or back up to dvd media and be prepare for the drive to die any days
most are lazy so I don't think they bother, their loss. oh well

Serial ATA is theoretically faster (provides more bandwith) than a Parallel ATA interface. However, due to limitations on the actual HD's themselves there is no realistic performance difference between the two at this time.

You guys are really pessimistic. I don't think I've ever had a HD die on anybody in my immediate family.
