Serial ATA on mobo

There is serial ata on mobos are there any harddrives yet that have this
feature and if so is there a significant boost in performance

All the major drive manufacturers have SATA drives out now. Performance is on par with the current top of the line parallel ATA drives with the exception of the Raptor but it's expensive and only out in a 36GB flavor.

maxtor has a really nice 80 gb 7200 SATA drive with 8 meg buffer that uses a regular power connector, they are easily available and retail for around 159.99. it was not too long ago that ata100 drives the same size were the same price.

$90 overpriced. SATA drives should cost less than parallel ATA, and they will when they become a mass market item. It is moving pretty slow though. Right now there is no rationale to own one. They offer nothing.

they offer nice skinny cables for better case airflow, and hot-swappable installation. plus, there are no jumpers to confuse you.

I didn't know about the hot swappable. I wouldn't have to shut off the power when I get a new HD. While Windows is running, I could swap the HD. That would be interesting, but I have my doubts. Any SATA owners tried it?

Ribbon cables don't interfere with air flow in any significant way. I know people think they do. Just rearrange the cables a bit. They are hard to twist around from the mobo to the HD though.

The biggest interference to air flow is the case. People pay $300 for a case that reduces air flow not quite as bad.

Getting rid of the jumpers is good. I wouldn't pay extra for it. They should knock a few cents off the price.

The biggest advantage to SATA in the next few years is that it is going to knock a couple of bucks off the price of computers once it gets into full scale production.

I realize it is cool to be the first one to have something. That is about the extent of SATA today.

Hot swappable? I'd be extrememly relucant to try to remove or replace a SATA drive while the box is running, unless it's a server specifically designed for it.
