NexFan.com has the Serial ATA SATA II Cable (Various Colors and Sizes) for $3 with free shipping. These cables are backwards compatible with SATA I device.

http://www.nexfan.com/sata-ii-cable.html

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Nexfan

They have a six month rating of ZERO, with numerous complaints of unshipped orders. For years NexFan was a great place to order from, but that seems to have changed in the past year. They no longer post their phone number and have disconnected their fax number. Buyer beware!

difference is data transfer capacity... the early cables (or lower quality ones) can't handle the faster speeds. sata i cables are compatible with sataii, but the drive will only operate at satai speeds in that case.

My question is how you can tell the cables apart. Any difference in appearances?

Well, given NexFan's "performance' with delivering the Yate Loon fans they had on sale, or actually their complete lack of performance, courtesy, stock, shipping speed, and more, they could be offering these cables as free with free shipping and I'd still pass on them. Taking a month to ship three fans, after charging the credit card within minutes of the order being placed, puts them very close to being in the quick-scam artist category.

I wonder how many people are going to get "delayed" in their shipments of this newest deal from Nexfan?

false. just as usb and usb2 cables are the same, sata and sata 2 cables are the same.

the only difference is marketing. effective marketing i might add.

sata2 cables do more often come with a locking mechanism. there is no difference in transfer speeds.

I think (another) key question is internal or external style.

The "internal" cables are primarily for few (50) lifetime insertions.

The "external" ones are different.
And, among other things, designed for many more insertions (>5,000).

Plus, I fear internal vs. external are *NOT* compatible???

And, it is unclear which type of cable these might be.
Though my guess is these are "internal".

Searching that site for "SATA", it seems they may describe "external" SATA cables as coming with a "latch" (a feature in the "external" style?).

Any SATA guru can set us (well, me) straight?

Edit: verified internal =50 insertions; eSATA (external) >5,000
also, eSATA extra layer of shielding
and, insertion depth increased 1.6mm to prevent ESD (Electro Static Discharge) damage
and, small spring "catches" for plug / socket retention

Agreed. Normally, I hate to disparage these e-tailers that are obviously small-business run, but this company in particular has a HORRIBLE record recently.

Disagreed. I have yet to hear of anyone not receiving any order from nexfan nor have I ever heard of any complaints regarding their customer service. Who the heck cares if it took a month to get a fan order? I placed an order for fans 2 weeks ago and I have no problem waiting 2 more weeks for them to arrive. As far as them 'charging your credit card within minutes' being so dangerously close to a 'scam,' give me a break. A scam?! What do you think they're doing, holding on to your $10 so they can invest it in the stock market?! Charging credit cards within minutes is how ecommerce works. You place your order, you get charged, then the company proceeds with fulfilling that order. Depending on availability, staffing/company size and a host of other variables, fulfillment can take any where from a day to a month. I don't where you've been, but that's how the internet works.

If someone needed a sata cable within the week, then I'd probably recommend shopping elsewhere. But if you've got a little patience, this is a great deal. I just ordered one myself. If it takes a month, that's fine by me.

Hmmm... then why is the SATA I cable that I have in one hand a far thinner/more lightweight gauge than the SATA II cable in my other hand? For the same, length, the SATA II cable feels almost twice as heavy.

Thanks OP. I'm in for a 75mm. That's around 30". May need it someday. No hurry, if it takes a month, that's fine. I don't have any internal SATA's yet (but I'm thinking about it).

Perhaps you missed the thread I posted earlier.
Here

The reason I'm frequenting these threads is because I had my original Antec 120mm fan in my Sonata II die on me within the last week. I realized it had died because Unreal Tournament froze up on me twice because of overheating. So I was in the market for a new 120mm fan and through the opinions/reviews of the other nice people here on AT Hot Deals, I got my Yate-Loon fan within 3 days.

If I had to wait for a month and deal with overheating during that time, I would have been extremely pissed off. Therefore, whether the people at nexfan.com like it or not, it's a public service that many people perform on these deal sites to warn each other about bad customer service.

Uh... perhaps you might need to read the threads that you link to, as I contributed to that thread 4 days ago.

I think everyone is in agreement that Nexfan is slow. I'm not debating that. It's one thing to post a warning that Nexfan orders might take some time to ship. That's a public service. To refer to Nexfan as potential scam artists, though... that's completely unfounded.

Nexfan is slooooooow. Well, to be more specific, they've been like molasses recently on fan orders. That's the sum total of their shortcomings. Nothing nefarious. Nothing duplicitous. Just slow. If that bothers you, scream it from the rooftops. Just don't try to make something more of it than what it is.

IMO, $3 for one of these, shipped (pick your size), however slow (as long as you get it) is no scam.

Different manufacturer? Different Quality cable? There is no difference between the SATA and SATA 3.0 (otherwise known as SATA II) cable specifications. They are all just SATA cables.

Isn't 75mm less than 3"?

Forgive me for not noticing that you posted in that thread. That said, point to me where in my post I said it was a scam.

In that thread which believe it or not, I managed to read without memorizing everyone's names, both "icetraxx" and "radioouman" stated that they were given the same "one fan short" BS story and everyone talks about having to complain just to light a fire under them.

Now, that may not fit the technical definition of SCAM, but doesn't that show you that they're a sub-par etailer? Maybe you like to be lied to and made to sit on your hands while you wait for something you paid for, but I wouldn't and when a thread comes up about them I intend to point to their reseller ratings, which have rightfully gone down since this stunt.

It's nothing new to warn people about lousy customer service, see every TigerDirect rebate thread in the history of AT Hot Deals. The idea that it's acceptable to anyone that an etailer, without warning, take a month to ship out your part is absolutely ludicrous to me. Unless of course, that person has something to gain by the store saving face.

I don't understand why somebody feels the need to come to the aid of Nexfan in these forums. Do you own stock in the company?

I appreciate very much when AT Forum members post their experience with e-retailers. Particularly, when those retailers' customer service leaves something to be desired. Posting your experiences with retailers makes the whole market more efficient and if some retailers can't cut it, they deserve to go out of business. That's capitalism and it's a pretty good system when knowledge is fully shared throughout the market. There's no reason to get testy with a fellow ATer when they complain about bad customer service--all of us are a community and the community's primary interest is in fully-informed purchases and use of computer components.

Personally, I wish I had read the whole Yate LED fan thread before I gave Nexfan my credit card. There are plenty of other retailers on the Internet selling the Yate LED fans and if Nexfan doesn't respond to my e-mails or ship my fans by tomorrow, I am going to speak with Chase about cancelling the charge. Jab-Tech responded to my e-mail on Saturday night and told me they had "hundreds of fans." They're going to get my business if Nexfan can't deliver.

I placed my order on the 20th and was charged on the 21st but have not yet received my cables. Order page still doesn't show shipped or list a tracking number. No response to email query.
