My IBM has a serial port on the side, but the easiest by far is to get a usb to serial converter to allow compatibility with everything.

Most of the HP business class laptops also have serial ports too

I'm running a DOS app, so have no USB support. Boot to DOS.

Was hoping to get a NEW laptoop with serial as well.

Dells seem ok, but what is currently sold and has a serial port?

My HP laptop does not have a serial port. It can be had via a docking stantion if needed.

This is what we have docking stations for. I like my laptops crammed with USB ports and other newfangled stuff .

If your app can run within a DOS session inside of Windows, the PCMCIA card solution mentioned by redbeard is good. Otherwise you'll have to find DOS support for PCMCIA cards too. Otherwise get a docking station for your laptop (one with a true serial port as lots of generic docking stations use a USB connection same as the USB adapters mentioned above and can be just as iffy).

Oyeve,
I happen to use a serial port for my external seral modem which I use for faxing. Much more reliable than a softmodem. And you can get external serial modems for under $15. now.

Very true. External HW modems are much more reliable than a softmodem.
