Serious Cooing Troubles

Well...how can i put this. My cooling situation sucks.

Ive got 1 120 mm fan in the front which operates fine, a Zalman heatsink (the smaller one, not the 120mm one), a Fortron PSU, and 1 120 mm fan in the back.

The problem is, the fan in the back frequently stops for some reason, which causes my temps to skyrocket. What the hell is this happening for? I think they're all ball bearing, but i see no reason for it to stop all the sudden (frequently). Besides this, my 6800GT OC is running too hot.

Is there anyway i can add another fan and replace my rear one (its a p-160 from Antec, and the screws are rubber, so i have no idea where i would find another)? Any suggestions?

I'd say the fan is dying.

Order a replacement and set the remaining fan as exhaust until it comes.

If all else fails, you can always use some wire to lash the fan to the case if you don't have screws

Does your Fortron PSU have "fan only" 12v connectors by any chance? I don't think it does. Antec PSU's have those; they are voltage-regulated according to whatever temp the power supply sees fit to turn them on. I.E. don't use those connectors.

Being that it's an Antec case, I take it your fans came with the case? Maybe they are temperature, controlled by a thermistor in the fan? I'm not sure about that. (Other P160 owners, chime in, please).

If your fan is bad, no worries. Those rubber plugs that hold the fan in can be reused, and even if you break them. Antec cases are all pre-drilled for standard case fan screws. Any retail 120mm fan will come with the four screws...or any local computer shop will have them. Or even four zip ties in a pinch.

To sum up some of the other posts, something is changing the RPMs of your fan. Either it's a self temp controlled fan, or it's plugged in somewhere like a motherboard fan header with Q-fan, Speedfan, something like that controlling the RPMs.

So check the fan first for make/model and look it up online to see if it's got thermal control, if it's not, plug it into a different header, like a 3-4 pin converter to a 4-pin molex directly out of the PSU.

If the speed doesn't stay constant then, your fan is posessed. Take it to the nearest church and dump it in the holy water. It shall then be healed.

I use YL 120mm for side intake and top exhaust fans. This greatly improves cooling temps inside my cases.
On my future builds, I have 250mm side intake fans ordered. Performance PCs
I plan on really keeping my cpu temps down to 33C/40C load! Maybe!!!!

jease, i didn't even know there was a 220mm fan. the fans (the one in front and back) are connected to a fan controller (sun beam rheobus). But it never used to stop, so i really dont think its the controller. is there anyway (or should i) to add another fan in there somewhere? Front is intake and rear is exhaust. thanks again guys

Get a Y extension, two 3-pin male to 4-pin female and plug it into a power supply molex. That'll tell you whether it's the controller or the fan(s).

These are always handy, they originally came with the vf700s.

but its not...it never did that up until about 2 months ago. ive had the controller for a while. what fan should i get thats 120 mm? if its high rpm i wouldn't even mind because i could just turn it lower like a regular fan using the controller.

I'm using Antec TriCool LED fans right now. They do a good job, and they're quiet, but no bragging rights... you know?

Next time, I'm going with A.C.Ryan Blackfire4 fans. I love the looks, but I've never owned them before, so...

If you're not into LED/UV fans, and just want a good, old-fashioned, industrial quality fan, I would suggest the lowly Sanyo Denki San Ace 109R1212H1011.

They ain't pretty, but they'll do the job -- guaranteed -- especially on rads!

BTW... DO NOT plug Sanyo Denki fans into your mobo headers. Burn up your controller instead!

If you have a fan controller then try taking your rear fan off the fan controller and see if it still has problems. If you've already done it then you can try to remove the rubber plugs with a small flathead screwdriver (I've done it before without messing the rubber plugs too much). The other option is you can look online like at coolerguys or svc for some other rubber plugs. Note that on my P160 the screw holes are actually smaller than normal and case fan screws DO NOT FIT. As for a cheap fan you can always go with a yate loon; they're about $4-6 at most places.

but it only stops every once in a while...i mean its far too frequent for my tastes, but it'd be hard to measure because it's pretty random. and im thinking it cant be the fan controller because ive had the controller for a while now and that never happened earlier on.

I recommend SVC.com for cheap fans. And I would say to forget about the fan controller BS and just get one that you can live with running at full speed all the time. The Thermaltake fans move a lot of air and don't make much noise so that's a good place to start.

I only use the Coolermaster 120 mm fans!!
They are quiet even at max rpms as well as very dependable!!

I use an 80mm slim Zalman fan inside my case to improve aurflow in a dead spot locatd where my memory is located w/ fan holder ..
