I used to drink 1-3 drinks on average, 5 times a week. Gf and I are having a booze-free January and I've been shocked by a) how difficult I find it when around others who are drinking, and b) how much better I'm sleeping. Think I'm losing a few cm around the waist too.

I drink Jack Daniels mostly. But I don't drink every day. When I was younger I would sip jack and play GTA Vice City. When it warms up I suspect I'll drink more, but having a smoke on the patio with an iced drink while it's cold sucks, so I drink tea or coffee.

I'm known to buy Mikes Hard lemonade or Angry Orchard.

I got a bottle of jack for Christmas and polished it off in a freaking week!

I have a set of these.

http://www.whiskyglass.com/

If you are drinking whisky out of anything else it isn't a whisky glass.
Glencairne glasses are nice, however Riedel sommelier
Single malt glass is also nice price notwithstanding.

I generally sip a short pour ~1oz of any one of my scotches or bourbons twice to three times a week, more often with company who enjoys fine spirits. When a visitor inquires about my bottle of Edradour barolo cask, or perhaps Springbank 18 yr, I just get the impulse to want to taste and nose them right then and there.

i rarely drink when i work the next day.

i rarely don't drink when i don't work the next day either.

football season is an exception to rule 1, but i hardly drank this past season because people hardly got together for games since the redskins season was done like mid-october.

No I do not. I don't even have a drink every week now. Drinking is a rarity for me at this point. Alcohol just puts me to sleep and when I get home from work I'd rather be awake to spend time with my wife & dogs than asleep on the couch wishing I had more energy.

Not many people drink daily in America, which is why its use has been one the decline over the last 20 years. I blame the internet and computers. The brain is more valuable with all its cells intact.

I must be moderately alcoholic. Until I started my spring cut recently I was drinking 4-10 beers each night after work. I am trying to just drink 1-2 now.

no, I very rarely drink at home outside of when we host parties.

but my boyfriend usually has a cocktail when he gets home from work and a glass of wine with dinner... he comes from a family of drinkers, though (as soon as I walk through the door to his mom's house, I'm immediately offered a drink).

my parents, on the other hand, pretty much only drink on vacation or when dining out at restaurants.

Fairly normal, but I believe low-grade alcoholism is normal for many. It's undeniably bad for your health, though a great many things are of course.

I stopped drinking years ago, not due to alcoholism, but just because I think on the whole it's an unhealthy pastime, physically and psychologically.

What is "low-grade" alcoholism? You have it or you don't.

Oh, and as far as alcohol being unhealthy:

Everything in moderation.

That said, I probably drink a glass of wine or two a couple times a week during the off season (Dec-Apr), and only on Saturday's during season (May-Nov). I used to be a heavy drinker before I got into triathlon.

Looks like I should drink more.

I can't imagine drinking daily. I love getting drunk, but alcohol is so calorie dense. Drinking every day would get you fat really fast.

2-3 beers on Saturday. Every couple of weeks I might do the same someday during the week at happy hour with friends or colleagues. Generally all craft beer.

Except that:

1.) There are 7 Calories per g/alcohol (less than fat).
2.) Those 7 kcal/g are not used efficiently...so you are actually getting less...probably on par with protein/sugars.
3.) Alcohol increases metabolic rate

In actuality, light/moderate daily consumers are less likely to be obese than teetotalers or heavy drinkers. Two glasses of wine = ~200kcal. That's not hard to fit into your TDEE...that would be roughly 6% of my maintenance calories.

You make a compelling case for me to drink more beer. :hmm:

Except
1) Fat has a satiating effect. Alcohol does not. Also, people tend to eat something alongside alcohol, while fat tends to be in the food you're already eating. Alcohol isn't usually eaten as a meal (If you do, seek help)
1a) Fun fact, 6oz of craft stout can have around 500 calories in it. A single bottle of a craft ale around 300.

2) Complete bullshit

3) Alcohol increases metabolic rate because your body needs to process it. Anything in the world you eat increases metabolic rate. Except, like all foods, the increase in metabolic rate isn't offset by the fact you're drinking a ton of calories.
3a) If metabolic rate was all that mattered, I would just drink soda all day because sugar and caffine are both stimulants and would jack my metabolic rate up. That should let me lose tons of weight.
3b) Alcohol halts the burning of carbs and fats because your body prioritizes it before everything else.

What kind of weird fatlogic is this?

I don't mean getting sloshed. But i've been taken to having a dram of scotch or a beer for dinner. Just wondering if i'm normal.

You are normal. Nothing wrong with a person responsibly enjoying alcohol, especially after work or with food. To answer your question, I enjoy a drink or two in the evening I'd say 3-5 times a week. I indulge equally in spirits, wine and beer.

I do enjoy a beer or two on weekends during the summer, not so much in the winter. I'm not a big drinker. I've only been really sloshed once in my life. I don't plan on repeating it since the experience did not end well.

I don't, but I've been drinking more wine lately, so it would be kind of impractical. I would never recork or reseal a bottle. I'd have to drink the entire damn thing! Would prefer not to do that on a daily basis.

1.) Speculation and anecdotal, aside from irrelevant. Alcohol has 7kcal/g...there was no other intent besides stating a fact. If you want your drink to contain tons of carbs along with it, that's your decision. Though if you drink a heavy stout, I bet you it will be plenty satiating.

2.) Read up before claiming bullshit. For starters: Prentice, A. M. Alcohol and obesity. International Journal of Obesity, 1995, 19(Suppl. 5), S44-S50

3.) Where did I say that metabolic rate was all that mattered? It is a factor, however; and, alcohol raises the metabolic rate by a significant amount.

4.) How is that fatlogic? What is fatlogic? You stated that daily drinking will get you fat really fast. It won't, unless you use it to consume more than you burn. Pretty standard science.

Penguin, don't bother posting about science and calorie burning here. Quite a few still believe they can eat in a deficit and gain weight, because their bodies defy the laws of physics.
