I was curious so I used teh googles to find out that 12 oz of maple syrup would have 888 calories.

While I can't completely rule out drinking 12 oz of maple syrup (I would use a straw), I can't imagine any beer being that calorie dense.

It's not about the oatmeal or the chocolate. It's mostly about the alcohol content. Imperial stouts have 2x the typical alcohol content by volume than a normal beer. But that's not even really stout specific. Any high alcohol % beer is going to be higher calorie. There's a small increase in calories from the higher grain content used, but most of that is used to fuel the yeast for higher alcohol levels.

Correct on the alcohol but I always assumed that "heavier" beers were not just calorie dense from alcohol but contained more carbs as well and therefore my reasoning.

I don't drink everyday. Sometimes I'll go weeks without drinking, then just get the urge to get fucked up. Even then though, I never have more than 6-8 beers. I don't do liquor very often, but I'll have an occasional glass of wine.

Au contraire. I would argue that any glass with whiskey in is now a whisky glass.

Heh, indeed. I actually have a set of these three anniversary Glenfiddich whiskey glasses that I got from a friend who is a whisky shill. I don't really drink whiskey though, so I just drink bourbon out of them on occasion.

I travel a lot and love doing it - one of the benefits is that there are always great restaurants and bars to try out and with them their cocktails, spirits, and beers. From the last week of November through the first week of January, I probably drank at least 3 or 4 times a week with each outing including at least 5 drinks.

That said, I couldn't wait to come home and NOT drink - 10 days between when I got back and my first drink tomorrow night. Feels good, especially not being sluggish at the gym.

My normal routine is probably drinking heavily once a week with one other 2-3 drink night.

Well then you do drink "whiskey", as with an 'e' it typically denotes American or Irish while "whisky" refers to Scotch.

(My smartass comment of the day is done!)

Hmm, noted, thanks. I am woefully uneducated on that stuff; I really should pay closer attention to all of this.

Nobody really cares, other than the snobs...that said, I really appreciate higher-end spirits but am trying my best to stay out of the snob category. Not easy.

In traditional brewing you get the high alcohol by adding more grains or malt extract(or fermentable sugar of choice) to the brewing process. But it's still the alcohol that is accounting for a bulk of the caloric increase. You might see a swing of 10-15g of carbs going up to a higher octane beer. Say...15g up to 30g.

That's only 60 calories while the overall beer may be up 150 total calories due to increased alcohol %.

It all really depends on the type of sugars you use and the brewing style. There's no magical formula. There are a lot of "dark" beers that have the same or fewer carbs than light beers. And there are a number of higher alcohol "malt" drinks like the cheapie 40oz style stuff that has higher alcohol and almost no carbs.

But the overal message is that higher APV = higher calories. That's why a 1.5oz of gin has the same number of calories as a 12oz can of beer.

Apart from it tasting good?

I have a beer after work most days.

I work nights so that works out at a beer at 9am most mornings. :awe:

Well I haven't progressed to the age where I find alcoholic drinks to be tasty. Don't forget you're also in another part of the world from me where culturally you may be accustomed to drinking for taste.

Not every day. I do like to have a glass of wine or two with dinner. And I will drink beer on the weekends.

Honestly it is probably 3 or 4 days a week that I will have a drink.
None on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays unless I have a client dinner.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, most likely. Sunday, only if I didn't have much Saturday.

Ehh, I drink a bottle or two of stout or ale generally a couple times per week. If I am out with friends or going out to dinner I will almost always have a pint or two. But day to day, after work when I get home, in general, its usually just water in my glass.

One to two drinks every day is normal, with food and snacks, or even just sipping nursing a drink.

I know someone who drinks from 6pm to midnight every day after work. They are 25 and they could pass as a 38 year old.

Personally, I would like to get to the point where I am having a drink or two with dinner.

6 oz of pressed peanut oil or liquid fructose doesn't even have 500 calories in it.

You can't argue with logic against a <insert product> snob.

Why bother with a glass at all? Just drink out of the bottle...
