Serious GeForce2 MX Problem

I just bought a Hercules 3d Prophet II MX. I'm running Windows 2000, and I installed the 6.18 reference drivers for it. The 2d seems to work fine, but I can't get 3d working well at all. I first tried Quake III. It runs for about 3 seconds after I enter a level, and then immediately hangs. I then tried GLQuake. It doesn't hang, but the graphics look REALLY screwed up (lots of tearing and visual oddities). Also, the heatsink on the chip seems to be getting really hot (hotter than I would think it would be from all I've read about how cool it's supposed to run). I bought the card at a Best Buy, and the static bag it was in inside the box looked like it had been opened before (the seal was torn). I'm wondering if I got a bad card that's been returned before. Does anybody have any ideas? By the way, my system config is:

Dual PII 450s
Epox KP6-BS (440BX)
256mb Ram
Intel NIC
Creative PCI Sound
Diamond Fireport 20 SCSI, etc.

By the way, there are no conflicts, irq or otherwise, and the card is on IRQ 9. Thanks for any help. Also, I was using a Voodoo3 3000 before I got this card, and it worked great in both games (this makes me think it's the card).

AS I have been frequently ranting in this forum...

I have the 6.27 (and 6.26) drivers and they work great. I dual boot Win2k and Win98SE on one machine and Win2k, WinME on the other. The 6.18 drivers were giving all three os's big time problems.

All of my issues were resolved with the 6.26 and 6.27 drivers. Personally, I think that the 6.27 drivers are more stable...

The 6.18 drivers were an absolute mess, dont even bother with them, and dont listen to anyone who tries to tell you that they are ok. I know the people responsible for driver releases over at nVidia, and they have admitted to massive complaints with the 6.18 drivers, more than any other driver that they released.

If someone is having success with those drivers, they are seriously lucky...

Try the 6.31 drivers at 3dchipset.com
Also if that static bag seal was broken check you ram to make sure it ends in -55 (not -7) because people have been doing the switcheroo at BestBuy exchanging their OEM cards for retail ones due to the better ram.

Ok, I just tried the 6.27 drivers. The GLQuake problem is gone, but Quake III definately still hangs. Yes, the ram does end in -55.

A friend of mine was having the same types of problems with his GeForce MX card, he on the advise of another friend was told to reduce his Apenture from 64 to 4 in the bios. He now says he is stable for the first time so I would consider trying this if it does not work just move it back to 64.

I agree with Trifecta on the 627 drivers, I actually sat down yesterday and tried a bunch of Detonator drivers, then ran the 3dmark200 benchmark under default @ 1024x768 after each driver install with no tweaking and with vsync and antialisaing on I found the following resluts.

Detonator version 3dMark score
Hercules drivers 4042
533 3793
618 4156
626 4362
627 4795
631 4360

I am going to be using the 627 drivers, as far as stability goes I haven't had any problems and they are no doubt the fastest for my system.
