I was copying files from my external hard drive onto my desktop hard drive, as per usual. I stepped out for a second, and heard a weird sound. I came back a few minutes later and found that my computer was off. I tried turning it on again, only to find that it remained off. I checked my external hard drive on another computer, and everything was still in working order.
I figured that my PSU had fried, as research into that model had found numerous complaints. I acquired another PSU and installed it into my setup, only to find that it too didn't work. At this point, I figure my motherboard is officially fried, and now I'm crossing my fingers that everything else (including the processor, memory, and HD) are still okay.
I suppose my question is, what could have caused this mess? I mean, my computer was hooked up to a surge protector, and no outside sources seemed to have caused this mess (i.e. no brownout, blackout or lightning). Furthermore, I've transferred tons of data using that specific external HD on multiple computers, without a hint of problem.
It's just.. ugh... so frustrating to have that feeling in my stomach that I might have to entirely replace a computer I just built a little over a year ago!!!
