[Serious] How soon until robots take over the planet?

I watched 60 minutes this week, which covered the topic of AI. Specifically, one piece dealt with Watson, IBM's super computer. Long story short, Watson is now capable of diagnosing cancer and recommending treatment. IBM VP says Watson is at just single digit percentage points of what it's really capable of. In reality, it might not be long until Watson could partially, or even fully replace doctors.

So, how long until robots take over the world ATOT?

There is serious thought in the AI community that the 2nd level of AI (the one to really worry about) will be upon us in the next 30-50 years. Once that hits the 3 level (Super Intelligent AI) will take exponentially less time.

At that point it could go either way, wipe out all life on purpose/by accident (paperclip manufacturing) or lead to THE golden age of humankind.

Honestly, AI still isn't perfect. Take this example of AI....everything was going great until it got older, ate too much and ended up looking like Chumlee.

I have two thoughts about the lvl 3+ AI:

1) Hopefully they are "wise" beyond all comprehension and understand wiping out a species is a naughty thing to do and we coexist and reach full human potentia

2)They'll be wise beyond all measure and calculate how badly we suck as a whole and then wipe us out....

No one knows if or when and anyone telling you otherwise is talking out their ass. The most intelligent systems exist in secret government datacenters in places like Utah or its Chinese equivalent, and none of us are going to learn anything about them until well after something important happens.

The problem with wisdom for a computer is that it has to be programmed. If it is learned then how it learns has to be programmed. This is why it could be really bad, or really good. Depends ENTIRELY on the programming so we would really like to have the right people do it. Unfortunately it's a race to see who will do it first as the first AI will probably, once advanced enough, be able to prevent any others from being developed.

The AI will never take over. A small group of people who have the powerful tools like the AI will. That's the thing - we take for granted that all the things we're developing will always be used in a nice democratic system for the benefit of everyone. But they are powerful things that, if denied to you, make you quite easy to dominate.

I always figured it would never happen because humans would not let it... but then I forgot that corporations rule everything, and they WANT it, because it means they don't have to hire people. So I could totally see a serious revolution in AI in the next 10-20 years. I would give it maybe longer until it gets to a point where it can actually become self aware, if that even happens. The real danger is not that robots will kill us like you see in movies, but that they will be able to do almost any job. It's already hard enough to find a job now days with stuff like NAFTA and TPP and automation etc, it's only going to get worse when a reliable AI is thrown in the mix.

To a corporation, employees are considered an expense, a robot or machine that can replace that employee is considered an investment. I could see a company like nestle be pretty much 100% automated. They could have machines that are similar to the bagger 288 but fully autonomous digging trenches and laying pipe lines and pumps and sucking water from every lake. The whole system could be 100% automated. Every now and then it would mess up and tear through a whole village, but it will be a bunch of unemployed poor people against a giant corporation. Get out of the way that machine is not stopping for you.
