Serious question about STARTING smoking

For those of you who currently smoke, was it difficult to get started? I ask this because one time I tried a drag and it felt like someone pouring boiling acid into my lungs. Is this common to everyone? And if so, was your desire to start smoking so great that you worked through the pains associated with inhaling smoke?

Maybe I have over-sensitive nerves, because when people say a certain vodka is smooth, I think it feels like some sort of industrial solvent.

Why is your desire to smoke so great? If you're in high school, I can guarantee that smoking won't be cool in college. If you're in middle school, I can guarantee that smoking won't be cool in high school.

Why anyone would smoke now.. omg..

I don't think he's saying he WANTS to. He is curious how anyone could actually get started smoking because it is so hard on you at first.

I started because my best friend who was a few years older smoked. Seemed like the thing to do. Now that I'm a bit older and wiser I realize it was the wrong thing to do. And yes, you basically just fight through those first few smokes before you get used to the industrial solvent feel. And after a while, you'll learn to enjoy that feel.

Well, I don't touch cigarettes and I can't imagine why anyone would but I know alot of social smokers and it seems like they started pretty easily. It's all about the image and feeling you get from a cigarette after a drink, class, etc.

Oh yeh, Grey Goose goes down as smooth as water to me.

nicotine gives you a buzz when you first start.
i liked that feeling it gave me. i started smoking only when i drank. then it grew from there. started smoking more and more.
it didnt really hurt my lungs too much when i first started.
i constantly chew on pens, fingernails, so its more of the action of smoking im addicted to i think.
i like being able to get away from people for a few minutes and go have a cig when im in a social setting or at work.

i first started because it calmed me down on my breaks at work...
i smoked ultra-lights at first because i kept getting smoke in my eyes and reds were way too harsh, eventually i got used to it

When I started smoking I really had to struggle through the first several packs. I stuck with it because all of my friends smoked, and after a few weeks, it was like second nature. When you start smoking, the nicotine buzz is also quite nice, which helps quite a lot as well. And as has been mentioned, when you have been drinking, smoking is much, much easier.

For better or worse your lungs and throat eventually get used to the abuse, and the taste of the burning tobacco becomes a welcome part of your life.

You're right, and I'm not trying to make this a judgmental topic. I'm just wondering if others felt the same kind of burning sensation. For me, the sensation was so strong I gagged pretty hard for a few minutes. I ended up not trying again after that experience.

I smoked for the first time when I was in 6th grade, only took a puff... denounced smoking right then and there.

Fast forward to when I was 21. Everyone around me was smoking, and using it as an excuse to take a break. About 6 months in that environment and I picked up the habit. Now I'm 35 and smoke about 1 pack a week. I consider myself a very light smoker, and can even go for weeks without any smokes at all. I won't call myself addicted, as I usually only smoke out of boredom.

That was pretty much my experience; I smoked a whole cig once in HS, felt kinda weird and then puked. I decided that it wasn't really for me.

one day when i was away at summer camp i just decided i wanted a smoke so i went out and bought a pack of marlboros. i dont remember having any problems smoking. sure i didnt really inhale at first but i never coughed due to cigarette smoke. i guess because my dad smoked a lot when we were youger so maybe i kinda got conditioned a bit.

either way: DONT START.

i started when i was 15, stopped after summer camp, started again at 17 and have been smoking heavily up this day (im 20)... especially if you like sports dont do it it messes up your lungs... im gonna try and quit for the nth time (in fact i havent had a smoke since wednesday night)

I think you inhaled it wrong. You've got to hold the smoke in your mouth for a second or so before you inhale it, to smooth it out. Then you'll get a great buzz that lasts about five minutes, and a crippling habit you may wrestle with for the rest of your life.

Maybe. But I've witnessed several seasoned smokers inhaling with such severe suction that the insides of their cheeks must have come in contact with one another in their mouths. Maybe I'll try again some time.

I started when I was a borderline alcoholic and very self-destructive. I can't tell you what the first cig felt like because I was pretty much drunk/buzzed 24/7.

The first ciggarette I ever tried was a Marlboro Red, was smooth, didnt cough or anything. Great buzz feeling too.

I stopped after the first few, because my dad was addicted to it (though he never smoked in front of us, or in the house).

I smoke a pipe maybe once a month if a friend comes over, but mostly for the smell and social aspect. When I used to drink with my friends every once in a while I would smoke a pipe or cigar (and inhale), still no problem.

PS In other words, for some its second nature to start, for others its hard.
