This actually happened to me twice: One with the door to my condo, a rather well-reinforced door that wasn't going to budge an inch on a kick - I had to call a locksmith to literally cut the handle open.

The other time was on the door to my bedroom. I didn't have a cell phone or anything in there with me, but luckily I did happen to have a screwdriver in my nightstand; I disassembled the thing to get out. Since then I've always kept a screwdriver set in the nightstand, ever vigilant against the threat of fucked up door handles.

lol, I am thinking about leaving a tool set under my sink now. :awe:

When I worked security at a large DC one of us would have to go inside the warehouse while the other would man the gate. The warehouse was huge so gate was about 3/4ths a mile away from where I was when I got stuck in one of the facility's hundreds of bathrooms. The facility is in the middle of the woods, so cellular coverage is bad and inside the building it is almost non-existent. My radio did not even work from some corners, and this happened to be one. my coworker thought I was checking fire extinguishers or something else that takes hours, so she didn't realize that there was a problem for a couple hours.

The door jam had something to do with the floor settling in that area and twisting the door frame. Under the pressure the paint from the door fused with the paint from the frame and there was simply no way to budge it from the inside. I can't recall how I ultimately got out but I do recall that I eventually reached someone who was able to push while I pulled (they may have come within radio range).

(1) Temp fix = 1 piece of duct tape over latch.

(2) Perm fix = new door knob which should take about 5 minutes to install.

If you're alone in your apartment, don't shut the bathroom door all the way.

Guys serious question.

Is it possible to file a complaint with the Fire Department or NYC 311 to complain? It's extremely dangerous to be trapped in an apartment with no way out.

I'm filing a claim against your man-license.

I think it should be at the minimum temporarily revoked.

Somebody beat me to it!

The part on the door that goes in and out is completely seized. I tried using a hammer to get it to move but it won't budge. If it closes, I am dead.

I have no idea how to fix this shit. None.
If that part is truly seized, then the door can't close

I lol'd. I hope this wasn't a legitimate thread. If a door really gave the OP that kind of trouble, he really has my pity.

Only on AT:OT will you find a bald ape that can use a smartphone with 10 times the computational power of the first moon lander but can't change a handle and lock set of a bloody door.

If you had a man card I would be flying over there right now to take it off you, as you actually posted this here I know you don't have a man card so I can safely mock you over the interwebs.

Here is the easiest way to fix the problem.

Go outside and look for a man, you may have trouble because you think a man looks something like you. They don't. Just find a male human being whos arm are roughly 3 times the size of yours, he will have stubble and be wearing non ironic clothes. If you aren't sure if someone is a man or not one sure fire way to tell is watching a woman walking by him, her knees will go weak and she will stumble a little.

Once you have found the man go take his huge hand in yours, look into his eyes and say this.

"Can you help me please I need a man"

You can then take him to your apartment (GET HIM A BEER) and he will fix your door.
You forgot to mention the man can't be wearing designer Diesel jeans like the ones OP would be wearing.

This is why I like living in a house, if something breaks I can fix it. In an apartment you can get in trouble. Either way I would fix something like that myself allowed or not. Or I'd just let it lock and bust the door down to damage it even more so they have to fix the entire frame too.

Speaking of getting locked into places, I almost locked myself in the hospital MHU once when I worked there. Turns out the door that locked behind me did not quite latch and I was able to get out. Otherwise I was stuck in the stairwell. I don't know if they would have actually let me out, I'd have to prove that I'm not mentally insane and actually work there. :awe:

Long story short,

I was lucky I had a cell phone at the time and called my brother who had an extra key to my apartment, so I didn't have to dial the Fire Department. It took him about 20 minutes to get me out after he got here.

Did it still smell like poop when he got there or had the smell dissipated by then?

Can you really get in trouble for saying 'fuck it, I'm not waiting on someone' and replacing a cheap interior doorknob? Seems like the worst they could do is replace it again because it doesn't match or something. It's not like you knocked down a wall.

But in the OP's case, I would've knocked out the jamb and let them hang a whole new door/frame on their dime.

Oh, and the stairwell thing...now that's legit. Steel door, steel frame = fuck life. You're trapped on that one.

Next time the OP doesn't post for a few days, ATOT will be wondering, "did he get banned again? Or did he lock himself in the bathroom again?"

FWIW, if anyone ever goes to the OP's apartment, take a #2 phillips screwdriver. Ask to use the bathroom. Quickly (it should only take about 45 seconds) remove the door knob and reverse it so that the lock is on the outside. Lock it and leave the door open. Next time OP goes to the bathroom and closes the door, we'll never hear from him again.

The door is probably hollow. You can break it through pretty easily in the worst case scenario.
