Seriously cool video showing how different displays work in slow motion

It's cool to see for sure. Especially when they zoom super close into the LCD and you can actually see the bonding wires for each pixel. Would be interesting to see how they even make that. I guess a similar process as packaging sillicon chips.

Trying to figure out which DSLR and 5x macro lens he is using. I sent an email to them, but only got an autoreply late last week and nothing informative.

I'd be curious too actually. I'd love a good macro lens but all I ever find is "add ons" that go on an existing lens and none of those are all that great. There's also the trick where you can flip a lens the other way and it works half decently but you have to manually hold the aperture open (it's spring loaded) so it's kinda cumbersome. If it's hard to find on Amazon it's probably because none of us can afford it.

Even though I knew all this already it was a pretty nice demonstration, especially the zooming in and slow motion CRT.

I saw this on Ars this morning and just watched it. Awesome video. I love CRTs so it was awesome seeing the beam scan.

This is all stuff we knew when tv and movies were first made... Nothing new at all here.

Yup, how hard can be it be to put a slo-mo cam in front of a TV?

People who are competent to explain the tech on an actual technical level will be lucky to even get 1% of the viewcount of the low effort crap plaguing YT.

It's not that it's hard, it's that not a lot of people have access to a slow mo cam. I think it's pretty cool to get down to that crazy FPS level and slow it down. Hydraulic Press Channel has some pretty interesting slow mo stuff too.

I still own a Nikon <FF tele/zoom that has a rather nice macro capability. Unfortunately, there was nothing akin to it in the Canon world whether I was looking for FF or less than. Bummer. I still have not received a response from my inquiry.

Interesting to see the sub pixels of the LCD screens. Which is fascinating in that i have seen broken LCD screens that are taken apart and they just look like a few sheets of plastic. How those sheets of plastic can make the images we see is almost like magic.

I have a decent LED/LCD (Samsung un55ks8500) i considered oLED but something i read that may be coming in a few years is Electro Luminescent Quantum Dot display (ELQD)

"This next generation technology would mean tiny quantum dot crystals inside individual sub-pixels within a 4K TV’s pixel array being charged by electrical current to create distinct patterns of extremely refined color and light. In other words, goodbye LED backlights and hello extremely thin QD displays."

Magic...lol that's it, it's magic, not technology.

If this is nothing new to you, why stay and comment against those who like this subject / tech?
I never said I don't like the tech involved, you are trying to interpret what needs no interpretation.
It's nothing new to anyone, this is old information, not new for some people and old for others. Motion pictures have always been made up of a series of still images shown in succession.

The movie above was made to settle a bet on whether a running horse ever has all 4 feet off the ground at once. It does as seen in the second, third and fourth frames.
I remember seeing the episode of 'Death Valley Days' that told the story and how the movie was created, very interesting method.

Sounds retarded when put that way.

Film was a series of still images shown in succession. It's a stretch to say that LCD televisions are anything like that.

The video isn't necessarily about film but about how it's displayed on modern equipment (and how that modern equipment works). Saying the video is "nothing new" because everyone knows that film is just a series of images in succession is asinine.

They are exactly like that, the only difference is that each still frame is broken down into scan lines because the display cannot show a full screen image without burning up. It's still a series of still frames, but now even limited further by a shortcoming in the display.
