I cannot believe people can be this friggin' stupid. So the situation is this:

(== is highway, >>>> is onramp)

===================
>>>>>>>>>(insert yield sign)
G - person who thinks they are being nice
O - oncoming car

So traveling along, and someone is coming onto the highway from the on-ramp. Given that the on-ramp has a yield sign, car on on-ramp slows down. Now insert person thinking they are goody two shoes, decides to slow down on the highway to allow on-ramp car.

====G==============
>>>>O>>>>>>

On-ramp car slows down (since y'know - yield sign?) further to get behind person on highway. Person on highway decides to come to a COMPLETE STOP in the middle of a highway to allow person from on-ramp entry.

=========G==========
>>>>>>>>>O>

Nowhere on the highway itself is there a sign that states to yield to on-ramp traffic. This isn't one of those highway merges, this is a regular on-ramp.

Fortunately an accident was avoided, but I have seen accidents at this on-ramp spot numerous times on my daily commute. Seriously what kind of special level of retard does it take for someone to come to a FULL STOP in the middle of a frigging highway to allow on-ramp traffic?

/rant

TL;DR - person acts like there is an invisible stop sign in the middle of a highway.

I don't like people who cruise in the right-hand lane bumper to bumper and refuse to let traffic merge. There's an on-ramp by my house that merges into the right lane of the freeway in a couple hundred feet, and more than once I've damn near been in an accident because people don't realize traffic is merging in. Be aware of your surroundings on both sides if you're in a merge lane and shit like that can be easily avoided.

I have one of those on my way home every day. The jerks on the ramp expect oncoming traffic to stop and let them in.

I've never seen an accident there - yet. :knockonwood:

they drive scared and are uncomfortable with the thought of driving along side another car that needs to merge into the lane they are driving in

I'm so glad I don't have to drive on a limited access highway every day to work.

There's a 65mph highway on my commute home where traffic literally slows to a halt from 4PM to 6PM, because people will stop to let people merge from the on-ramp.

That... is the reason why I don't leave work until after 6PM! Could they easily leave room for a car to merge in? Of course. The only issue with that is how drivers spend the entire (long) on-ramp accelerating up to a measly 40-50 MPH (remember, it's a 65MPH highway).

Rear ended a shit for brains woman who short stopped in the middle of a wooded highway curve to let someone in oncoming traffic turn in front of her.

The biggest thing she should be allowed to drive is a pair of hard pants.

You have to let people merge on to the freeway though, or else you force them to come to a complete stop, which means that when they do get an opening, they're merging from a dead stop instead of at traffic speed, and that's dangerous. It also slows down all the traffic behind them, which adds to congestion elsewhere. A simple solution would be to move out of the merging lane if you're not exiting the freeway within the next mile so that you don't have to be bothered by people merging on.

you know on a busy rush hour yo just need to get over it. all lanes are packed and the cars on the onramp will just have to stop.

wooh ooo!!! you just took out a whole lane!!! way to go!!!!

so what now genious? no driving in the right lane unless exiting? sorta like no driving in the left lane unless passing?

Pisses me off when people stop on the highway for any reason. If it's rush hour, don't try to make a left turn in the most stupid place where it's near impossible. Don't bother, use a different route. You're holding up traffic for nothing. Turn right 3 times if you have to. There should be no left turning signs everywhere on the highway imo.

That and people who take bloody ages to take a right turn. GTFO. The highway is salted more than McDonald's fries, there's hardly no snow, there is no need to stop to turn, just slow down, let go the brake, turn, then apply the gas. Safe and gets you out of the way fast.

Then there's people that just randomly stop, just for no aparant reason. Yes it's illegal to use a cell while driving, stopping in the middle of traffic does not count for pulling over.

What's funny though is sometimes the right lane will come brutally slow, and for some reason the left lane is completely unoccupied. So I'll get in that lane and do the speed limit and I'm just zipping by everybody. I keep having to check the speedometer because it feels more like I'm doing 80 when I'm really doing 60, but that's because everyone else is doing 20.

Oh, and funny thing, I did a typo when I wrote speedometer, and the suggested spelling was pedometer. I did not realize that was actually a word. Is it kinda like the sword in LOTR that turns blue when there's orcs around, except it's a toy that turns blue if there's a pedophile around?

If it's an on ramp I'll gladly let the car merge in but I refuse to let any asshole who rides a lane that is ending to the very end and then try to cut in at the very last moment.

Also it's the responsibility of the car merging to safely merge onto the freeway. Slowing down or moving over to let someone in is done more as a courtesy.

I see almost as many near accidents caused by over courteous drivers as discourteous ones. People have no idea who has the right of way. Bending the rules to suit some excessively subservient gene you've inherited just makes for chaos on the road. The rules are there so I don't have to guess what you are going to do, you should know it and I should know it. What is funny is that 90% of the time when someone pulls something like this 10 other people that didn't see this aberrant behavior coming are screaming, squealing their tires, honking their horns, or giving this boy scout the finger. Now, this person is shocked at the reaction to their over the top civility. They are like, what is this world coming to?

Measures footsteps/distance walked. My grandmother used to have a pedometer

My foot Dr. severely doesn't like it when I introduce him to people as a pedophile.

Actually now that you mention it, Pedobear is actually suppose to be a pedestrian safety mascot. Yeah, that worked out very well.

This is why I tailgate on the highway. Idiots always wait until the last possible minute to merge in and to get over to exit. Every day I see people doing 2+ lane changes at 75 MPH to exit. Every day I see people trying to get on the highway at 45 when the highway speed is 75.

I'm safer riding less than one car length behind the guy in front of me than following a safe distance and risk some idiot Dale Junioring me and making me slam on my brakes or swerve onto the shoulder. Sure I look like the jerk but I'm safer this way.

About a month ago where I live, some dumbass decided to 'stop in the right lane of the highway because somebody was broken down and parked in the breakdown lane - they were just seeing if 'everything was alright'. Needless to say, they were rear-ended at high speed, ended up involving a 3rd vehicle as well - I mean...WTF are people thinking stopping on a highway? Luckily, aside from two totaled vehicles, nobody was significantly hurt.

I agree that people need to merge onto the highway, but the issue is that there's a complete failure in negotiating merges. The people merging don't get up to speed when they have ample time to do so, and the people already on the road either do not change lanes (to the left) or just start braking to let people in rather than leaving a gap.

A decent amount of people that I've run into in the south just seem to not care about inconveniencing other people.

The amount of assbags who refuse to move over to allow merging traffic some room even when the left lane is empty dwarfs numbers of drivers who are too accomodating of merging traffic.

I've been driving highways for a really long time now and I've never seen someone stop on a highway to allow for a merge. I see asshats try to run merging traffic off the road on a weekly basis.

I had a police officer pull me over for not letting him merge onto the freeway in stop and go traffic. He rushed to the end of the on ramp and then tried to force his way in front of me so I just rode the bumper of the guy in front of me so he couldn't get in. The first moment I knew he was a cop was when he turned on his lights to pull me over (unmarked car with a plain clothes officer behind the wheel). The real surprise came when he told me that I had the responsibility to let him in because I was in the merging lane (?). We had a civil discussion about the fact that he was in the merging lane, not me, and he ended up letting me off because "we have the same birthday." I'm not sure if he was ignorant to the law or if he was just pissed that I didn't let him in but I'm also not sure which is better.
