Alright so I've got a wireless network going in my apartment, which I can connect to just fine on my desktop, but both of my roommates computers can recognize that the network is there, with a very good or excellent signal, but neither of them can connect to it.

my girlfriend's computer hasn't had trouble for a little while, but now it's the same as my other roomates now.

Any ideas? Need more info to help?

It's not really a security issue... I'm using encryption, and the other computers have worked fine with it before. So far as I can tell (given my pretty constant 900kb down speed) nobody is trying to siphon off my access.

I'm sure it's just a question of some setting I've got wrong, but I can't for the life of me figure out what the problem is. Why would it suddenly lose connection? According to ipconfig, the lease was renewed shortly before the connection was found lost (on my gf's... haven't been able to get my other roomies working for a while). What setting would I have wrong on hers that I can connect just fine even when the lease is renewed, but she can't? (I'm using comcast btw)

are you sure their PCs don't have any firewall software like Norton Internet Security? I have helped a friend with the same issue and it was due to firewall software.

I'm fairly sure, but i'll check and give an update... The one who hasn't been able to connect at all was running windows me, so i killed that off and installed XP... still didn't help.

just checked... the gf does have some form of norton installed... she's writing at the moment so i didn't get to see anything but the little auto-protect icon... I'll try to disable it later.

Hmmm... maybe my other roomie has the windows firewall enabled?

i'll check these out, but are there any other avenues i can explore if these aren't the case?

Ok... I got my girlfriend's compy connected... all I did though was change the name of the network, causing windows to see it as an entirely new network and detect the settings again. This is making me think that when comcast renews the DHCP lease and distributes new ip addresses, her computer is seeing the network, but is trying to connect to the old ip address. Does this make any sense? If so, how would i make the ip address of the router static, without messing up the connection to comcast (which, as I understand it, needs to be able to dynamically set IP addresses)? I'm getting a little out of my leauge here, perhaps, but I see in the router settings something about setting up a virtual server... if I did set up a virtual server, with a private IP address, would that work? Would her computer then look for the private IP?

Feel free to let me know if I'm speaking nonsense... I'm not so much into the whole networking thing, but I'm trying to learn more.

You should just call your isp and ask them to setup a static ip address for your connection... some places can do this for you, but will charge a setup fee, and a montly fee of $10 and up. So my best bet for you is to call the isp and ask them to set it up. They will charge you montly... but it will be a lot less than 10-15-20... or then again... maybe not . Good luck

Here's an outside place that sets up static ip's

static Ip dandy net.
