Most of it is painful to listen to, however it is an acquired taste just like Japanese noh, Chinese nuo, Indian classical raga, and native American rituals.

LOL, how so?
American pop culture influent the Vietnamese during the war till now, and disco made a huge impact therefore Viet culture is a replica of American 70-80 culture.

There are still some amazing traditional Viet music that are around but you really have to dig for it (Hat dau that originated from Central/North Vietnam).

PS. Western influent in Asia is due to the American imperialistic expansion after the World War....not Japanese.

viet language is like what comes from strangling a cat. its just how it is, not every language is pretty.
asia in general is a bad place to find good music anyways.

The instrumentals are good. The singing is not. It's very unmelodic.

It's like traditional Chinese opera, only in Chinese opera BOTH instrumentals and singing are unmelodic.

1. I would have to say that some languages, or rather, some human sounds don't work with pop music. It's not that they sound bad, but they sound out of place, and to a foreigner like me, since I do not know the language, all I really notice is the subsequent attempts at keeping with the beat. There is probably more to it, but unfortuantely I cannot appreciate it due to the language barrier.
