Stupidity personified.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- A 10-year-old boy here has been suspended from school for having something most students carry in their supply boxes: a pencil sharpener.

The problem was his sharpener had broken, but he decided to use it anyway.

A teacher at Hilton Head Island International Baccalaureate Elementary School noticed the boy had what appeared to be a small razor blade during class on Tuesday, according to a Beaufort County sheriff's report.

It was obvious that the blade was the metal insert commonly found in a child's small, plastic pencil sharpener, the deputy noted.

The boy -- a fourth-grader described as a well-behaved and good student -- cried during the meeting with his mom, the deputy and the school's assistant principal.

He had no criminal intent in having the blade at school, the sheriff's report stated, but was suspended for at least two days and could face further disciplinary action.

District spokesman Randy Wall said school administrators are stuck in the precarious position between the district's zero tolerance policy against having weapons at school and common sense.

"We're always going to do something to make sure the child understands the seriousness of having something that could potentially harm another student, but we're going to be reasonable," he said.

I guess we should outlaw pencils too. I got stabbed by a pencil once. Pens should go, too. Paper cuts can be damned lethal, and books could be used as bludgeons. Please bolt all desks and chairs to the floor. Chemistry class should go, too ? all that potential harm with glass and beakers full of chemicals. Pad the walls and swap out all the glass windows for plexiglass. Don't get me started on gym class and the potential for injury...

Still waiting for the day when teachers are required to to teach lessons by writing in sand with their fingers and kids have to eat with their hands in the cafeteria because knives and forks are dangerous.

I had that happen to me too when I was a kid. It was in my pocket and stabbed my thigh when I sat down.

I still have some in my arm, too. I had a pencil, pointy side up, in my back pocket and was running - jammed on elbow down on top of it.

I'm glad you said it because I was just gonna say: "MOST things in the school house could be weapons, especially pens and pencils."

Hell, just walk in and use your creativity to figure something out.
And whose more creative than anyone?
4TH GRADERS!

They have just enough knowledge of the world and just enough childish fanatsy to come up with more ideas than anyone else could hope for.
I dont think creative weapon-making is beyond their capabilities. Apparently the school doesnt either because they suspended him and threatened additional punishment. All because of a tiny little pencil-sharpener blade.

MORONS!

Damn, didn't they learn anything from the Joker?

Pencils are obviously more dangerous than the sharpeners!

I sitll have pencil lead in my index finger from one of those fat pencils we used in 1st grade.

Should I sue the kid (who should now be 43, assuming he is still alive and can be found) for assault with a deadly weapon as he stabbed with the pencil?

When I was in 8th Grade a fellow student, who was not acting maliciously, jokingly put me in a headlock and pulled me downwards. He misjudged the effect this would have, and smashed my head into a desk with considerable force. While I didn't end up needing stitches, I did bleed profusely all over that particular room; I still have a scar from the incident.

Looking back on it, if there had been no desk, I would have been fine. Clearly, the desks must go. Children should be taught in padded rooms with no furniture and no potentially harmful writing utensils; let them memorize the information as it is said. In addition, because of the harm children can cause to one another, they should all be bound to the walls in straitjackets to prevent them from potentially harming anyone else around them. It's the only logical thing to do.

Jeeze, that's ridiculous. Couldn't they have figured out that it was part of a pencil sharpener?

Wow, and our tax dollars are paying these people!
