FYI the PERC won't like that. You will manually have to reimport it as a foreign disk each time and that will cause the "Raid 0" you created to go to "degraded." If you want to do something like that you should grab a pure SATA card and then install a removable bay in one of the 5.25 bays. (I think 310 had bays, tower?)

Yes, the 310 has 4 bays in the front.

3 of the bays are taken up by the current drives.

EDIT

I am confused. I thought the purpose of hot swap was to be able to do stuff like this?

Pull one drive out, put another one in, be ready to go.

They are only hotswap for easy replacement without bringing the system down. A raid controller has more brains in it and will not tolerate swapping the disks like that like a "dumb" sata controller would.

I just scanned through this. The problem parallels a difficulty I had with my sig rig and simply the (Intel) driver in AHCI mode. I'd switched from RAID. Meanwhile, my server doesn't use RAID. I use drive-pooling software. Both systems now use the native MSAHCI driver, which provides for dismounting a hot-swap drive.

Another poster mentioned an OpenManage software. There are utilities available -- freeware -- that support this need. But I'm not up to confident familiarity with your Dell 310 (which I searched to get an idea.) There is definitely a fix for this under a lot of scenarios besides your own.

I recommend you read it. You are way out in right field.

Let me point out a few things:
PERC 6/i is not an Intel software RAID with BIOS settings. It is an LSI based hardware RAID SAS controller.
OpenManager is Dell's system Management application and has nothing to do with backups.
MSAHCI doesn't apply.
There is no "good" fix with out additional hardware.

Would an external drive bay any better?

The current bays are built into the tower with a metal enclosure. I am no sure how I would install a SATA card and wire it into the current bays.

I just want something I can backup the server and workstations, remove the drive, install another drive, and have a backup off the server. Something where I can rotate the drives every few days or weeks.

The 310 should have 2 x 5.25 drive bays on top. Typically one optical and one empty. You could plug something like this in: (example only)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817998020

and plug it in to (again example only)

http://www.amazon.com/Crest-Port-SAT.../dp/B005B0A6ZS

Personally I would spend a couple of $ to get a 1/2 decent SATA card. Also the 310 may have onboard sata you can attach to. I think the optical drive hooks up to it but there should be 2-4 ports I think in there.

I am liking your suggestions.

It looks like there are 4 unused sata ports (took the side off the case). But I do not know if those ports support hot swap?

For the StarTech 5.25in Trayless Hot Swap Mobile Rack, have you used those before? Do I need to buy an extra enclosure for each drive?

The 5.25 tray will stay in place, but will I need an extra 3.5 enclosure?

It depends on the bay. That one I think just loads the bare drive like a tape.

Unnhhh . . . OK. I didn't "assume" that about the controller, and I know MSAHCI doesn't apply. But are you sure the fix requires additional hardware? You would know better than I -- of course and no doubt.

Obviously you'd want hot-swap with a hardware RAID, regardless. I'll just keep quiet and learn something . . .

I like the Startech hotswap hardware. somehow I thought a separate SATA controller might apply here, which I see folks have linked in. In that case -- "right field" but not foul ball . . . .

I have to ask. If you where looking for a backup drive like this why not just get two external Hard Disk's from Costco?

How much data are you looking to backup?
Is this a business or personal setup?

We already have a small usb external drive, it is running out of room.

This is for a small business.

I have seen those. Just make sure to have an antistatic case around since the drives are unprotected.

Would a usb docking station for sata drives work?

Something like this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-120-_-Product

Or this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...3469-_-Product

It is going in the server room. Nobody will be bumping into it.

I got slammed earlier for being "off-center." If this isn't a matter of hot-swapping drives from the array, you could simply get the low-profile SATA-III PCI-E card, configure it as AHCI, throw in a Startech hot-swap bay and caddy -- all fine. USB would also be fine -- without the add-in PCIE card. The docking station would also be fine if "USB."

I always thought the docking station idea was good for testing HDDs or a temporary connection for cloning. You can do what you want with any of these options.

You weren't slammed for being off center, you were slammed because you didn't really post anything relevant to the issue. This issue isn't related to your Intel RAID to AHCI or MSAHCI drivers. You also referenced OpenManage along with some vague freeware reference which made it appear you had a minimal idea of what it is. Unfortunately this simply resulted in additional confusion.

This could be made to work with the front bay. It just becomes a multistep process that has to happen each drive swap. It would be simpler to USB which has been recommended, if he prefers SATA then one of those bays attached to the internal SATA connecters world also work.

Obviously I have hurt your feelings but that isn't my concern.
