Hello everyone,

I am in process of building a server for a small accounting office. The primary use of this server is to allow 7-10 workstations to run applications off the server and data storage. There will be sql server running on this box as well. In general, database related application so you can prob say data/app server. Now I am looking for suggestions on what I should get as far as mobo/cpu(s), HDD, CASE, PSU, etc....

Thanks for your input.

P.S. you can also suggest full server config.

What kind of budget? Overall, I would suggest something like:

AMD X2 4400+
2GB Corsair/Kingston/OCZ Value
Dual 250/300/400GB Seagate 7200.8 in RAID 1
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
MSI x300 SE
Lian Li v1200B
Enermax 535W SLI
Whatever DVD Burner you like (Backups)

That's my suggest for the base of the server. Of course you could add a RAID 5 controller for SATA or SCSI for more storage and security.

Obviously you will want SCSI since people will be running apps off of the server. However much space you need is up to you. I really don't know whether AMD or Intel should be used, but You may want to go with the new 64 Bit Opterons and a TYAN Motherboard....other that that I am not too familiar with Server Rigs. - Just trying to keep your thread alive .

Thanks for the suggestions, do you know how much would all of that cost approximate that is?

Dell has everything you need, and 24/hour support. Getting a technician out there when things are broken shouldn't be difficult either.

No. I'd recommend dual proc, plenty of RAM, and SCSI though.

What kind of apps will be running off the server? If it's just database access for 7-10 people then you don't need a ton of horsepower. The big thing to worry about would be uptime and redundancy for data protection. Things like dual power supply and RAID for storage are the important things. And don't forget battery backup. That costs money too. I think you'd be closer to 3k.

You have to talk to the people and see what they really need. If they say they don't want to spend any money then let them know they have to make sacrifices. You should really get a good grip on their business requirements for the server.
