Server Build

Hey guys, alright so I'm piecing together a server setup for my dad. He will not be playing any games on it. Its being built entirely for his business work. Here's the criteria:


2 Dual Core Opterons Processors(I'm assuming AMD is the one to go with, but Intel is possible)


4gb Ram

4 Drives(Raid) (at least 150gb apiece)
How are the 150gb Raptor X 10k rpm drives when compared to the similar 10k RPM SCSI drives?

Motherboard is up in the air

Video Card---Lowend(probably PCI express) unless video is onboard

Case- Need a nice large case with ample cooling

Power Supply- Should I opt for a 600w? (Redundancy unnecessary-consumes too much power)

Beyond that, its really up to me what to put in the rig.

What kind of application will run on this? Web server? Database? Something else?

ok the software was written in Visual Basic
He'll be doing Database work
Running Windows 2000 Server

Ok, from memory, Raptors werent quite as high performing as SCSI drives, but the cost of going SCSI, I think its not worth it for anything less than enterprise level servers. lets see, thats gonna be ECC registered RAM.

Ok, Tyan seem to make pretty solid server boards for socket 940 Optys. Im guessing 2xx series, dual core ones? I think the Tyans come with onbard graphics (soem of them anyways), but otherwise something like a 7600GT or so, packing plenty of graphics punch without blowing the bank.

Case: is this not going to be a rack mount? ger a full/ super tower, servers dont get moved much, so the size/ weight shouldnt matter, and that gives you lots of room and air.

Thats about all I can say for now, do we have a budget to work to?

What kind of system is this replacing? What ran the server software before?
