You can control the color of each LED separately. They used to be long shift-registers that simply pass the info on to the next light in the string. The new ones still pass the data but will ignore it if it's not addressed properly. That's the simple view... I think it sends a really long data string that talks to the strip as one device.

Y'all are a very bad influence... It's all your fault. On the other hand, my wife is happy I'm spending so much time in the house.

My issue is that my "datacenter" is in my upstairs office and it tends to heat up the entire upstairs, causing the wife to complain. I finally had to turn my second physical server off, at least for the summer. I've seriously thought about building a cooled room in one of my attics and housing my equipment there. I'd really like to build a mirror of my main server (dual E5-2620s, 192 GB RAM, roughly 30 TB raw storage) and do some Hyper V and Sophos clustering, but I can't do it in my current office because of the heat constraints.

My rack is in the attached garage, so noise and heat are non-issues (area is used as workout room, spare (beer) 'fridge, dog food storage, etc.). That said, the 2950 doesn't see much use because it does heat the space up to the point of being uncomfortable, but I leverage this as an excuse to upgrade to later-gen equipment, hence the R320.
