Server Memory Thread

Ok like me most of the people that got in on the recent Dell Server Deals will have to get some more memory. Unfortunately these servers do not take run of the mill ordinary PC2100 DDR, but require so called registered ECC DDR. Since it's mainly used in professional applications it is not as widely available as ordinary PC2100 DDR RAM and thus is more expensive...

This thread may help to locate the most resonable and reliable vendors for this type of memory

In general 512 MB is probably the minmum one should consider, and 1x512 appears to be generally cheaper than 2x256MB. Crucial and Dell want $80 for 256MB and $145 for 512. Admitted this would be a worry-free purchase, but considering the recent decline in memory pricing it's too rich for me.

Until yesterday www.bananpc.com seemed to have the lowest price of $70+$6S&H for 512MB of WinTech with Micron chips, but they appear to be OOS.

Today there are a couple of vendors on www.pricewatch.com that have prices starting at $77 shipped. The cheapest is a vendor called 11cb.com, but could not find the product on their site....

There was another thread out there for some deal at Crucial, it involves a promotion of some sort. Just look for the deal on this board.

I actually did order 512MB of DDR 2100, but I think I will order a second stick of 512MB PC2100 DDR buffered/registered for that server you mentioned. The memory it came with does not really cut it.

The crucial deal ($20 coupon) from last week was for basic unbuffered DDR only

i've got two 512's of registered ecc pc2100i got from work (boss ordered the wrong stuff and couldnt send it back and it won't work in most boards) that are just sitting there not being used...

anybody know of any relatively inexpensive (read - desktop , not server class) boards that will use the stuff?

and no, i can't sell it. kind of a moral agreement between my boss and i.

Asus A7M266...The board is cheap now, and mine is running w/ 2x256MB PC2100 reg ecc. Never had a problem with this system-> runs 24/7 for the last 2 years...

Well. I just ordered another stick of 512MB RAM. This time it was registered and buffered. The coupon does work as well. What it does not work on is PC2700. It seems to work on all PC2100 sticks.

$20 off is $20 off.

Wow that's good to know - but you probably still eneded up paying about $125 - right?

after taxes (PA) I save about $12.

Well, it is memory for a server, I knew what I got myself into before I bought the sever. But this will be plenty of memory until prices drop some more. Even what is in there right now is not a problem. Just nice to have some "room"

And not to forget, it is Crucial memory, those little things do make a difference to me.

Dell memory for 1600sc

Crucial memory for 1600sc

Hmmm. Dell has 256 for 54 bucks. Not bad.... I wish I could find a stackable coupon ... But oh well... It's still pretty cheap for registerd ram.

beats Crucial @ 60.00 Both are free shipping...

Then this is where the deal comes in...

512Megs... Dell site.. 143.61 Crucial site.. 145... Both with free shipping but there is a 15.00 coupon floating around if you look for it...

Bring the total down to 130... I guess that isn't too bad for speced and matched RAM. Can't use the coupon for the 256, or I'd probably buy it.

I am thinking 256 + 128 Dimm would probably get me by since I'm not doing anything really taxing my server...

Anyway... I don't know if REGISTERD RAM will be getting any cheaper. If I were to buy, I wouldn't buy this stuff off of some cheap place like price watch... Since RAM is so flaky and motherboard esp servers are so picky about the types they use your probably asking for a big headache but then on the other hand you might get lucky.

over half of the computer problems I have experienced are from cheap ram... It can make a very stable system unstable very quickly!

JUST DON'T DO IT!!!!

Hmmm, I guess the REAL DEAL is buy 2 sticks of dell 256MEG RAM for 104 dollars! Anyeone know if you'd take a perfromance hit by using 2 DIMMS instead of one?

I found that bananpc had cheap ram via pricewatch. It's made by Wintech, who I hadn't heard of. So I did some searching and it turns out bananpc just mirrors wintech's site (with slightly different prices).

Try ordering from wintech directly...

Wintech DDR PC2100 ECC Registered

Now, does anyone know where to get Xeon processors for this? I'm thinking of selling the existing 2GHz and buying two matched 2.4's.

GoogleGear.com has the Xeon processors. How much do you want for the 2GHz CPU?

I just saw that mwave has corsair 512 ecc registered for $100+$8S&H here - this may be a solid middle ground between price and quality

They also have apacer and their own brand for about $94

i ordered the $45 amd 700mhz + shuttle mb from them. did it twice. they seem to be ledgit. one board quit working so they sent me another one that has been tested. I'd give them a 9/10. they ship stuff out within reasonable time. mine took around 3 days. rma was fast too.

wintec is their parent company. the invoice has both companies on it.

I would order without fear, they have been great to me, and the prices are very competitive.

drop me an email if you want more info about them
