Personally, I do not see a reason to overpay for some brand recognition (i.e. Crucial) if there are perfectly good memory makers out there with reputation which is just as good (Micron, Samsung, etc...). The important thing for all of us who got this Dell server is to make sure that the memory we decide to go with has been tested and got approved by the manufacturer of the chipset we have, which is ServerWorks. There is this link to
ServerWorks memory compatibility list, which has been mentioned before on this forum. There are actual part numbers for each item tested, that you simply have to make sure is the one you are getting and you should be fine as far as performance, compatibility and stability goes. BTW, Kingston is not on the list because they are not the RAM makers, but the module makers. They are on the approved module makers list (the link to that list is on the page mentioned above) with a whole bunch of other guys, who not many of us have ever heard of (personally speking) for that same reason, that they do not make RAM, just the modules. It does not matter who you buy it from as long as you trust the place and it's the cheapest deal you can find, just make sure you are not getting a generic or a "value" ram. The list is plain, simple and streightforward. It even has the speed rating of the memory at which it passed the server grade tests (well, 266 beats 200 in my book any day ). The question I have is if I want to pair whatever I get outthere with the 128 the server came with, will I have any problems due to some latency (CL) or CAS rating or possible speed difference (6ns vs 7ns vs 7.5ns etc...) I know, or can find out, everything i need about the memory I would buy, but not the one that I already have!!!:| On the Dell site, the image has nothing but the big-a$$ dell sticker glued on top of the modules. No brand, not much of a spec, except, that it is PC2100 ECC Registered! Duh! Dell is not a well known memory maker! Not to me, anyway. So, any help with more in-depth technical info on what I already have in that box would be greatly appreciated. If I will couple that ram with another stick of a much greater capacity (512M) I want to make sure it will work Thanks ahead of time to who ever helps me out, and, I hope, I (with considerable help from ServerWorks folks) was able to steer some of the confusion away for others.
