Due to serious time constraints and, to be honest, a lack of interest on my part, I have decided to suspend development on SETI Driver. If someone else would like the source, I'll gladly zip it up and email it to them.

Your contribution to the Seti Project will be long remembered. Thank you Mike.

I sure hope one of the many talented programmers who are associated with the Seti project take you up on your offer and continue the development of this great utility.

Wow,

Just as everyone else said Mike. I use SETI driver and didn't realize you were the main coder until I saw this thread and clicked about SETI driver now. I know you are displeased with me and we don't see eye to eye but I hope that what happened with me is not a reason for your "losing interest". As an MIT graduate and obviously talent to offer the world it would be a shame to lose your input and contributions.

David,

Although I feel that what you did was trespass (along the lines of jumping a fence marked Keep Out), it certainly wasn't as severe as that IDIOT DA in Georgia was trying to make it out to be. I am definitely glad your legal troubles are over (I hope) and sincerely hope that you find an good employer who isn't afraid to hire you because of this. Personally, I feel the appropriate penalty would have been a verbal reprimand, let the DC project run, and any future monetary gain from those systems only turned over to your employer.

Your situation didn't have any bearing on my decision to not continue SETI Driver development. That was based on knowing how long v1.0 took to produce and the realization that v2 would take about twice as long and me not having the time (or desire to create the time) to do the job right. v1 took about three months of hard-core coding. It was my first major effort using the Microsoft Foundation Classes, and for anyone who knows MFC, they can tell you that there is a serious learning curve. v2 would require an additional learning curve as it would delve into a major new part of the Windows API (and MFC support for it) as well as require a complete rewrite of the internal control structures. I estimate it would take me about three months to complete at 2-3 hours a day, 3-4 days a week, with the bulk of the time working on the internal control structures.

Mike.

Hi Mike, I am very grateful to you for the Seti Driver. It's a program I have used 24/7 on 3 machines for a very long time and I can't forsee a time when I will no longer want to use it. It's the perfect tool for anyone with one to a few machines running seti Cli.

Untold thousands of seti WU's have been done by people caching WU's using Seti Driver during times that Berkley has been down or otherwise not able to send WU's. Your contribution to the project is huge, and I thank you for it.

Not only have you given your program for free, and now offer the source for it to anyone who wants to continue development, but you have also been responsive to users like us.

I was very happy that you responded so quickly back in September when I emailed you and asked you to help us with a problem, one that turned out to be caused by the Seti Cli and MS code conflicting, and not your program at all. Still you came and joined the forums and helped us determine the source of that trouble and in doing so you made some friends here.

Again, a great big hearty Thanks!!! from me and from TeAm Anandtech.

I completely understand and appreciate you being so nice as to offer the source code for further development.

I would also like to say THANK YOU for SETI driver. I've run it on every system that has SETI and it's a super program....an excellent piece of work. Without it, I wouldn't have completed all the wu's I have done....so, an additional thank you for helping the TeAm! I hope someone with programming skills takes you up on the offer, this program must continue to evolve for the sake of the science.

Thanks a million Mike!

Yep, pretty much what everyone else here has said.

Thanks SO much for Seti Driver, it has cirtainly made my life a lot easier!

You mentioned the source - Not that I am immediately interested, I'm sure I (or someone else in TA) might be in a few weeks/months time. Could you email it to me please? I'd be very grateful If you dont want me to distribute it to anyone else interested, then I'll understand.

Email: migroo@blueyonder.co.uk

Thanks very much.

How can thanks ever express the work that went into what you have done. Your talent will precede you and you will do well where ever you go, and whatever you choose to do. Everyones talents lie in different areas and it would appear you have found yours. But never fear to open new avanues and start new adventures. As I like to tell my children....
"You can do anything, you just cant do everything, so choose wisely there are many in this world that need what you are going to offer....
This seems suitable in your case as well.
For me it is medicine, I just play at building computers, and very much enjoy the family here. I am off to med school next year. Being an EMT is not enough, and in my footsteps is a 12 year old who wants to be my boss...(lol), A 19 year old culinary artist and an 17 year old accountant. God has been good to me.
And how well you have used your talents. BRAVO!!!

And to David:
Best of luck to you and your family. I have just learned of your tradgedy and can tell you that God sees us through everything and provides us with the support we need at our lowest moments. It is time to put this behind you and learn from your experience, as we here are also learning, and find your place again. I would not rule out running your own business if employment becomes an issue. You have the determination it would take and there are grants available to small business owners. Again Best of luck.

And to everyone else here at ANANTECH, I Love You Guys..

I have to add my voice here and give you a BIG thanks for all the effort you have given with SETIDriver. At first I thought it was more of a novelty program, something I ran a few times to cache a whole ton of WU's and then dump them all at once, made me feel like one of the BIG guys
Lately though I have run it 24/7 on both my machines and will NOT give it up. The problems at Berkely have made your program THE most valuable tool for us SETI addicts. EVERY time I come home lately I see the yellow or transmitting green icon and guess what?...I don't care anymore!...I KNOW SETIDriver has it under control and I have lots of WU's to keep me going. Excellent work on an very valuable tool.

I would echo your kind words for David and family..well said! (hey, another EMT here as well!)

Mike,
Let me add the DSLR voice to the thanks. Seti Driver is one of the standard programs we at Team Starfire encourage new crunchers to use. It has that rare combination of simplicity and power. Thanks for creating it. I was looking forward to v2.0, but I understand your decision.

Mike,

Count me on the list of people who owe you a debt of gratutude for SETI Driver. It was this program that really got me interested enough in the SETI project to plant the farm. Thank you so very much for your hard work!

Thanks again for a great app!

Many, many thanks for your generosity in programming and releasing SetiDriver. I have put thousands and thousands of WU's through it over the last year or so and I would likely be hundreds behind my current position were it not for SetiDriver's caching feature!

Again, thank you!

I gotta say I didn't think there was going to be an update to SETI Driver. The version I have works flawlessly. I can't image being able to put too much more functionality into such a small, tight and fully functional program. I'm just thankful for what you've given us up to this point. Best of luck to you in your future projects!

Mike,

I've pumped out 26k+ WUs all with the aid of SetiDriver! Thank you very much for your time and talent in providing us with such a helpful product. I have it on my 84 year old Mother's system and she makes sure it is flushed daily! Using SetiDriver made it much easier to get her involved.

Thanks again!
