On of the problems in our culture today is that true morals are rare. Todays generation views "morals" as mostly a matter of "convenience". Laws seem to mean "do not do it if you will get caught". Many times, morals are rationalized to what is "popular" or what are the values of the majority. Seems the views have shifted significantly into the gray over the years. There appears to be few if any absolutes.

So much for my preaching ...

Well said.

The "it's only a crime if you get cuaght" mentality is tearing at the fabric of society. But then, that's just my opinion...

The keyword here is "OBVIOUS" ... the ones that were not so obvious didn't "get caught. In my mind that means these were probably the tip of the iceberg ... I would like to have seen more of a ZERO TOLERANCE policy.

As to any "good guys" on S@N ... they had to know something was in the "wind" and they made a choice. If they were unfortunate to not have known ... they should have looked around a bit ... seems the ole eyes were closed or had wool over them. When something looks too good to be true ... well it often is.

Unfortunately with the classic project if you had cheaters on your team, your only method of getting them off was to harass them. Even with Team founder access you couldn't boot people off. I know a lot of the good honest guys from S@NL emailed Berkeley about the problems on their team. They just had too many people that joined up that were producing bogus results and never posted on their forums. They tried contacting the people and never received replies.

Many people on this team worked hard to make sure that cheaters never felt welcome here, but if someone really wanted to get on our team and cheat in the end there would have been nothing we could have done about it if the harassment didn't work. That is one of the many reasons Classic was so broken.

Oh I agree with you, Smoke, it's unfortunate that a few bad apples could ruin the stats/rep for lots of other very legit folks.

Hewlett-Packard didn't lose anything either, but we were the largest team that didn't lose anything!

P.S. S@NL have noticed.

That said, I must admit it really is nice finishing 4th in the World!

And one more thing ... "I told BBR they'd never stomp our ass." You can now put that down in stone and put it on the highest hill.

I remember the days when we were so worried about cheating and trying to keep it honest. It was almost like a witch hunt if you produced x amount of wu's in x amount of time.

I feel sorry for those teams that dealt with the cheaters as well as the extra scruntiny it caused. (Must have been wide spread more than I realized at the time seeing as so many were hit at the end). Most Crunchers are/were honest and dedicated to the project. They do not deserve to be berated for a few individuals dishonest practices.

I remember smoke (greg) having to get some cheaters blocked from his "queue" too.

I am against cheaters, but to say that S@L deserved this, I don't agree, I agree that removing the cheaters and their results was "the right thing to do", but S@N itself should not be held accountable. They have lost enough.

If we had had cheaters points removed how would we feel if another team implied we turned our blind eye to them?

You all deserve a  and 4th is a sweet place to be. I too am glad we maintained our lead over BBR lol

I only did 1,500 SETi classic WUs but I'm proud to say they were all done correctly and I'm even more proud to be part of a team of none-cheaters!:beer:

I think you're going a little overboard ,of course its wrong what they did ,but we aren't talking about hole swaves of people here ,just a handful of sad people scattered amongst various teams. Most of S@Nl & OcUK are decent people.
As to the general attitude you refer too ,yes its sad that some people seem to live like that ,but I don't yet believe that most people are like that ,I'd prefer to carry on believing that if possible
Btw I hadn't intended to start a moral discussion ,sorry

Re S@Nl ,I know for a fact that in the past some of them have known of cheaters in their team & have reported them to S@H ,& in some instances S@H did act (Cobra lost a stack of credits) ,but sometimes ,especially in more recent times, S@H have been too busy to do anything about it.
I'd bet that at least some of them did know of cheaters in their team & reported it & that action has only now been taken.

Mark,

The bold names in both the first and second lists had their totals reduced. The names that are not in bold in the first list obviously did not have any WU reduction. The names that are not in bold in the second list are completely deleted accounts.

So when you see a bold name in the first list [The Top 100+ after Audit], you can look down in the second list for their bold name to see how many WUs they had before the "reduction".

Clear as mud?
