Ok, thx, I guess I should or could do a before & after test.

I just hope my CPU can stay cool enough for optimised apps as it's peaking at 65C running Rosetta atm (ambient 24/25C).......... their's only a bit of dust on the cooler .

But still no one's answered my question .
So are the lunatic apps still faster than the std ones?
Atleast for the Ati/AMD-applications where shouldn't be any differences, because it's the same persons what's compiled the official and the Lunatics-applications.

For CPU where's a big difference in the log-files between standard and Lunatics, but atleast as far as I can see where's little difference in the speed between versions. While the Lunatics-version explisitely says it's AVX if you've installed this version, the standard version does include AVX-tests in the logfile and taking a look on other computers non-capable computers includes SSE3-tests or something instead of AVX so clearly it includes selection of the "best" type based on your cpu-capabilities.

Since I've never had a Nvidia-GPU the only info I've got here is to look on the top computers-list, and apparently neither the standard nor the anonymous-versions most seems to be using includes any mentioning of who's responsible for making these versions in the logfile.

Note, all this is under Windows, I've no idea how things are for Linux/Mac.

I don't think they have reset their data base since you joined. Maybe it will happen then.
Have you tried to get the two merged at Boinc/seti........... I don't know if that is even possible.

No clue either how merging would work.

Registered here: http://www.seti-germany.de/ on the forums, finally. All activation emails were obviously sent to my spam folder - naturally (damn tight Germans, ;-) are so secretive...). Took me a while to discover.

Asked for advice on a thread there. Let's see what happens...

If it were me, I would try to contact Berkley/seti. They are the ones who seem to hold the key. Set.Germany is just pulling from the seti database of users.

I just looked at seti users and now they show one instance of Jalapenito and it appears to be the original with next to no credits, and no computers.............but the project list is populated........
Looks like a bit of a cluster f*.

Maybe someone here has a suggestion.

Thanks , I've only ever had Windows OS's.
So it seems then there's not a lot of difference these days between the apps in your experience.

In the last few days I've been running seti with both the stock app and the lunatics app. With 40 workunits I averaged a ppd of 6333 on the stock app and I averaged 8888 ppd using the lunatics installer(v43b). Both were run on a 3770k at stock speeds with all 8 cores. I wasn't able to compare the difference in the gpu apps because it's still too hot here to run my gpu.

I'm in!

Finally made it - http://www.seti-germany.de/Wow/users_team.php?lang=en&team=30191

"Dude" from Seti-Germany was of great help.

Edit: BTW, Berkeley never responded to my e-mails...

The "lunatics apps," are they only relevant for GPU crunching, or do they also help CPUs?

I have a bunch of CPUs, but only a few shitty GPUs.

If they help CPUs, where can I get the lunatics?

The lunatics app installs optimized applications for seti, allowing you to crunch regular seti wus with applications designed around your cpu (sse3, avx) and/or gpu (opencl, cuda, intel). Over 40 wus the optimized apps ran about a third faster than the normal application.

That reminds me, we have no 'join team' link on our SETI page!

Good to know, thx .

Looks like the data base has been reset to zero. We might get the smell of burnt rubber when this thing starts..................

There doesn't seem to be as many entrants this year. (664 at this time.) But people were joining up up half way through the event last year.

I have had a lot of heartburn trying to get a couple of Hawaii GPUs to work on an AMD MB with a FX-8350. They did not want to play nice together, under any circumstances. The GPUs kept throwing computation errors. I finally found for me anyway, that mixing the Nvidia cards and ATI cards on different motherboards works best for me. The Hawaii cards are working fine on Intel motherboards and the FX-8350 cohabits just fine with the Nvidia cards............ go figure.

Good luck everyone...........don't burn anything up.

Yea you'd think AMD GPUs would stand a better chance of working with an AMD m/brd!

(I've not totally forgot about the SETI link btw! :$ )

Is there any chance of someone smarter than I putting this here in this thread?

I'm not even sure how you did that so it wouldn't be me.

Assimilator1: at least Jalapeno got squared away, that what matters right now.

We have a entrant from Antarctica for crying out loud........... that is almost as exotic as Pitcairn Island. Maybe they could give a "most exotic" or "most out of the way" prize.

I just registered. It's supposed to be hot in New England the next few days so I'll probably just run a couple of GPUs and no CPUs.

Yea I was wondering whether to just crunch on my 5850 instead of my C2Q, but the results for my GPU have disappeared or are buried deep now! , so anyway I can't work it out now until I crunch some more on the GPU.

Unless someone can give me some HD 5850 times?

On 2nd thoughts I found the GPU times in the last few pages.
My HD 5850 takes 1250-1300s for 90-100 credit WUs.
My C2Q @3.6GHz takes 6900-7900s for 100-120 credit WUs.

So picking a rough middle figure for each!
HD 5850 (stock) 1275s for 95 credits = 13.4s/credit
C2Q @3.6GHz 7400s for 110 credits = 67.3s/credit ÷ 4(cores) =16.8s/credit

Now to find out how power each uses (CPU will be about 180-190w IIRC).
SETI on CPU only, 190-196w (mostly)
SETI on GPU only,
SETI on GPU & 1 CPU core, 210-220w (GPU load 94-97%) (GPU temps peaking at 89C! Think I need to dust it out again )
SETI on both GPU & CPU, 267-278w (GPU load 89-95%).
With the PC idle it's drawing 112-114w, so presumably GPU crunching only would draw ~ 188-198w??

So assuming the GPU only power figure is accurate, it's got ~20% higher output (possibly a little more when it has free use of a CPU core) whilst using about the same power as my CPU! Not bad .
But GPU crunching on SETI does cause significant GUI lag for my rig .

Damn, how do I stop CPU crunching but allow GPU crunching?? (without changing the online preferences to stop d/l CPU WUs).

Use CPU while processor usage is less than = 1%
Use at most... 1% ...of processors on multi-core
Use at most... 1% ...of processor time

You'll still have a ton of downloaded CPU WU's though.

Ah thx Tony , I had seen those settings & tried them individually, but not all at once.
I'll give that a go tomorrow.

Oh & I want to keep the CPU WUs as I probably won't switch to GPU crunching 24/7 due to GUI lag issues.
