I just noticed I'm gonna fall to 12th place. I've got 5 GPUs crunching and 2 CPUs. You all are awesome!

Next year I'm crunching only nVidia.

Finally I dug up a USB to SATA adapter and plugged the disk of the Ivy Bridge-E + GTX1070 into another Linux x86-64 computer (which doesn't have a dGPU). After I copied the boinc data directory, I edited the config files to suspend computation and made the GPU detection file sticky (both steps may have been superfluous), then started the client with the copied directory as data directory.

I then successfully reported a dozen tasks which had already been completed on the 1070 before the shutdown, and aborted + reported the remaining tasks. The computer ID was preserved during this transition, merely computer name, CPU type, and operating system showed up changed on the setiathome host web page, reflecting the properties of the new computer now.

So, at least at SETI@home and while using the anonymous platform, it is possible after all to fetch tasks on one physical computer and report them after completion from a different physical computer.

It took a rather long while from the reporting until the new task state was reflected at my results tables at the project web site (half an hour maybe).

---
Edit,
I forgot: An important step was to switch SETI@home to "No new tasks" on the new computer, before it would needlessly request new work. Since I configured the suspension of computation before I started the client, I could conveniently switch to NNT after the start. Alternatively, I could have added <dont_request_more_work/> to the SETI project section in client_state.xml before I started the client.

Hey Stefan, There's no way, I hope, to make many copies of this to upload to another computer like the old Sneakernet.

Duplicates wouldn't work. From the project server's perspective, the host with its ID, as well as all the tasks with their IDs, exist just once. After a task was reported complete to the server (or as aborted or error'ed out), another report of the very same task would be rejected by the server.

But carrying the one client with its one set of tasks around in the house or the neighborhood or on an intercontinental flight doesn't pose any problem. If the tasks are to be computed on a host other than the one which downloaded them, both hosts need to be binary compatible, or they need to look compatible at least from boinc's perspective through the use of the anonymous platform (app_info.xml).

We have officially topped the banner year of 2014 in points, and have several days to go!

Tony,
On a historical side note:

I remember 2014. There was a person with a data center or other. Hundreds of computers and so skewed the stats that it affected everything. He cranked out over 170,000,000 points, more than almost everyone else combined.

My last hurrah is complete So for posterity:

Now it's just a matter of waiting for the awesome guys behind me to clobber me in the coming hours and days.

It's all been great fun!

Edit: If everybody else would just stop now it would be dreadfully decent of you all chaps

I have a new system up, but its currently windows. What would the special client for nvideo GPU's do with a 970 ? I have all sorts of hard drives around if it would be worth the time. No SSD's left I don;t think/

I will be shutting down all my SETI machines (and one more) Tuesday morning, as it will be 95 degrees ! Even the 85 on Monday might be unbearable.

Sorry guys, not a big enough AC machine.

110°F tomorrow here.

But with the bulk of my completed tasks still pending validation, I don't think my output will drop at all in the final days of the race.

The past week was quite comfortable here in Germany (except if you are reckless and run 3.6 kW of computers in a room). Since this weekend, temperatures are up again to 90°F (32°C) high/ 66°F (19°C) low which are forecast to stick until Thursday inclusive. Not as bad as some periods in June and July by a good measure, but still rather uncomfortable for German standards.

Virtually nobody has got air conditioning at home here. Wouldn't be affordable with the electricity rates here anyway. (In the European context, Germany has the 2nd highest household rates after Denmark, and highest relative to consumer buying power.)

@StefanR5R , I'd heard that Germany was so anxious to take their nuclear plants offline, they are now in the unenviable position of re-commissioning some coal fired plants to fill the gap between inadequate renewables and the missing nuclear capacity. I'm surmising that such dirty power comes with a hefty tax burden to discourage its use, any truth to any of that?

Most of the time Germany is exporting electric power.
Some of the coal power plants are idling (but cannot be shut down just for short durations).
Several natural gas power plants have been built; they are mostly offline; at least one never even went online for a single day since its commission a few years or so ago.

Edit,
the nuclear power plants aren't really decommissioned that much faster than their planned service life is ending anyway. That plan was made by the conservative government after all. Unfortunately, Germany will remain surrounded by operating French, Belgian, and Eastern European nuclear power plants for another while, some of which are miserable wrecks.

I need to think of something.
OK. My plan B, adding some more CPUs, was flawed from the outset, as it didn't scale all that much. Plan C, calling the IVB-E + GTX1070 into action, was a deadend due to the computer refusing to boot after less than a day of operation.

So I went back to plan A again a few hours ago. (Or was that plan 9?)

If the plan holds, my points-per-hour should look quite healthy from now on. :-)

Having quickly gone to Linux from Winblows 10, again, I find one system (fully stable under WinTen) keeps locking up. I am not 100% certain I have fixed the problem, but the only real change in hardware is the GPU fan speed (easily controlled under WinTen/MSI AfterBurner). In searching for our old ( if not somewhat odd ) friends from Brony@home, I see they are now without a home. Good thing I backed up that guide @hiigaran made for Folding on Linux (with Nvidia), I found the fan speed controls I needed. No new crashes yet....

Although, I did read at the end of "Enabling overclocking" that 10T posted (top "from here" in post #76) is to add the cool-bit numbers together:

" To enable multiple features, add the Coolbits values together. For example, to enable overclocking and overvoltage of Fermi cores, set Option "Coolbits" "24" "

I wanted OCing and fan control so I entered #4-fan control plus #8 OCing = 12 (as 10T said I needed the 12 for it to work):

sudo nvidia-xconfig --enable-all-gpus

sudo nvidia-xconfig --cool-bits=12

Careful with doing this, I (imagine that) had issues with Tina (19.2) and using this for fan control. It would crash on me.......maybe because Tina is a b1tc............
