Darn it, by web server that help my queue died yesterday. Darn Epox 8K7A leaky caps! I have another board I can put in, but I have no idea how Server 2003 handles mobo upgrades. I may have another 8K7A, or I may have to shop around for anther one. This must be a sign that classic is coming to an end. I have reached all my goals in seti one except one, and I am oh so close! I have 2 systems that run setihide as a service and use my queue to refill. They are probably good for 4-5 days so hopefully I get this resolved before they run out.

Check out this FAQ here at Anandtech:

Surviving a MB Upgrade

I've had success using Microsoft's Sysprep changing from an ASUS A7V MB to a newer Gigabyte MB using the sysprep -pnp -reboot option. The -PNP option sets it to run through the Plug N Play wizard after reboot, detecting hardware/software, keyboards, mice, video, etc. It does ask for the license key.

Be sure to shut it down as it reboots, install the MB.

The only quirk I encountered was I had to go into safe mode in order to get the wizard to start. It hung up booting normally after the MB install.

Not as nice as a fresh clean install, but does save time having to reinstall everything.

YMMV

Oh, and it's always wise to have a good recent backup just in case everything goes south...:Q

Epox 8K7A leaky caps

You would not believe the leaky caps I've had on Epox boards!! One worked for a YEAR (or more) with stuff oooozing out of the tops of at least 15 caps. It finally bit the dust. I think David saw it once when he was over. I have had probs with caps on Abit, Soyo and Epox boards. I had one Soyo board repaired under warrenty. The guys did it while I watched, but on that board it was only one bad cap.

Well, good luck with it!

I had my Epox 8K7A do the same thing several months ago. I had new capacitors on hand so I replaced them all. Still running my personal setiqueue on it today If I wasn't so cheap I would have replaced the board and saved my self the trouble of changing them.

Where did you get the caps from? Is this something I can grab from Radio Shack? They do not look to difficult to replace.

Thanks Smoke! I will see how it goes in the next couple of days. The real bummer is this is the machine I had a proxy set up on for free WAP on my cell phone! DOH!

I will try that sysprep. Have you tried to use the repair disk thing that they mention? I have done the manual delete of the registry keys and stuff with XP.

This will be my first shot at this with Server 2003 so it sounds like the sysprep is the way, was just curious about the repair.

Radio shack won't have the caps, I get mine from a local electronic parts distributor. MCM also sells them online (mcmelectronics.com) let me know the value and voltage on your caps and I can give you the part numbers from their catalog. Their website is a little hard to find things on sometimes.

Add me to the group... had an 8RDA die of bad caps.

Yesterday, I went from an NF2-based Abit NF7-S v2 with AXP1700+ to an NF4U-based ASUS A8N-E with AX2 4400+, and by accident I booted the old Windows XP install off the hard disk - to my surprise, it worked (well, almost - the network adapter drivers wouldn't install, so I reinstalled as I had planned to do anyway). Good luck getting things up and running with minimal hassle.

Well now... just to test, I switched power supplies and it started to boot but would hang, then I tested ram. Turns out I have a dead stick of crucial! Not sure about the PSU but the fan was dead, so it probably is not doing well anyway. But so far I am back in action.

Good news. At least Crucial has a lifetime warranty ... doesn't it?

Well it died again. So it has to be the board. I will be able to switch it out tonight or tomorrow night. Bummer.
