Welcome to Team AnandTech SETI!

Our Seti-Classic TeAm is now 3,251 members strong!

Our Seti-Boinc TeAm now has 97 producing members!

Oops, sorry but with all of the editing I lost this part of the message.

*Special thanks to Spacehead who is going to keep me updated.

(We could use some volunteers to act as Mentors for the BOINC TeAm. Drop Spacehead a PM if you'd be interested.)

WARNING:

SETI WUs contain hidden rewards, and prolonged crunching can be addictive. TeAm members should guard against excessive computer building, parts hording, and stat checking. <Quote of recent new member, Pokey>

SETI - CLASSIC

How to run SETI-Classic and Join TeAm AnandTech

How To configure your SetiDriver for SETI - CLASSIC to use a TeAm SetiQueue.

Once you have your SetiDriver setup and working properly it is recommended that you use one of the TeAm's SetiQueues.
This will insure you have WUs to crunch when the Seti Server is down.

SETI - BOINC*

1a. If you are listed on the Seti-Classic Roster prior to 14 May 2004, use the following link to get Seti-BOINC running on your computer(s):

Activate your transferred Seti-Classic account

1b. If you are a new SETI participant, use the following link to get Seti-BOINC running on your computer(s):

Create an Account

2. You will receive a confirming email giving you the password you will need to complete the Seti-BOINC installation.

2a. Make sure you're using an active email-address, you must also activate the account before starting to crunch. Just paste the account-key from the email and hit "activate account".

3. Preferences: If you're already running another BOINC-project besides seti@home, choose the 2nd link. Otherwise, the 1st link "This is my first BOINC project". For most the default settings are good enough. After you "ok" the preferences, you're automagically transported to the... download page:

Download the BOINC software program suitable for your system <-- Here's the link in case you ever need it.

4. Open the program and let it proceed automatically to install BOINC on your computer.

5. After the program has installed you should get a screen asking you which program you wish to attach to the BOINC program. The installation package is a little weak at this point and could lead to confusion on what to enter. Eventually there will be more and more PROJECTS that you can "attach" to your BOINC engine.

5a. If you are using a PROXY, navigate the BOINC interface to "Settings/Proxy Server ..." and follow the directions there. Make sure you do this before proceeding any further because otherwise you won't be able to connect to complete the installation.

5b. Since this instruction set is for the SETI project, enter the following for the projects web address:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu <---Copy and paste this url ... it shows up as a link in our forum but you should only copy and paste it in the appropriate spot.

5c. Obviously, you would enter the BOINC PASSWORD referred to in step #2.

6. Things should go automatically from this point on. If you are running a hyper-threaded CPU or a multiple CPU system you should check to see if in the WORK area (see the tab at the top of the BOINC INTERFACE) if there is a Work Unit being processed for each of your processors (2 for hyper-threaded CPU systems).

6a. The 1st connection will use client-defaults, so if you've changed the cache-settings you will be, in effect, immediately asking for more Work Units. You may not get enough Work Units for multi-cpus during this initial download. Just let the client run for about 10 minutes when it will automatically ask for more Work Units.

7. If everything is working as it should, you'll probably (on NT4 & later) want to let BOINC run as service. To do this, exit the BOINC-gui and open up a cmd-prompt. Navigate to the boinc-directory. You could use the following string to get there more quickly:
cd "c:\program files\boinc" (if you installed BOINC in the default location)

Once there type in: boinc_cli.exe -install and hit the ENTER key.

If you're running XP, you probably also need to go into service-control and change the account BOINC to run as "localsystem".
Now start the service, or reboot.

v3.20 fixed the service-bug.

8. The last and most important step for our New TeAm Mates is to now Join TeAm AnandTech

*This is a work in progress and will be updated, amended, corrected at time goes by. If you think there are things to be corrected, added, or deleted please post right in this thread and I'll attempt to fix them ASAP.

We need some programmers on our TeAm to come up with our own version. Any takers?

Been crunching SETI since May of last year and finally got all my machines over to BOINC in the last few days.

I've incorporated my first attempt at an instruction set for Seti-BOINC.

Yes, I've gone ahead and installed Seti-BOINC on some of my machines. If BBR catches us in Seti-Classic I am going to be one pixxxx off hombre ... so I'm only doing a few machines for now. Most of my effort is still dedicated to Seti-Classic.

The instructions I've included in the Welcome Message are from my first impressions/experiences installing BOINC and attaching the Seti project to it. I figured I'd write up what I experienced for these kind of mundane procedures are quickly forgotten ... at least by a senior citizen. lol

Looking good, but a couple of points...

2a, To make sure you're using an active email-address, you must also activate the account before starting to crunch. Just paste the account-key from the email and hit "activate account".
2b, next step is setting up preferences. If you're already running another BOINC-project besides seti@home, choose the 2nd link. Otherwise, the 1st link "this is my first BOINC project".
For most the defaults is good enough.

After "ok" the preferences, you're automagically transported to the... download page.

5; if you needs to setup proxy, set these before attacking to the project, since otherwise you will attack, can't connect and be kicked out again...

5a; http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/

6a; 1st connect will use client-defaults, so especially if you've changed the cache-settings you will immediately ask for more work. Due to this it's not certain you'll get enough wu for multi-cpu. You must let the client wait the 10 minutes before it automatically asks for more...

8; Then everything is working as it should, you'll probably (on NT4 & later) want to let BOINC run as service. To do this, exit the BOINC-gui, open up a cmd-prompt and navigate to the boinc-directory.
cd "c:\program files\boinc" (if default location)
boinc_cli.exe -install

If you're running XP, you probably also needs to go into service-control and change the account BOINC run as to "localsystem".

And start the service, or reboot.

If anyone wonders, v3.20 fixed the service-bug, so the service will not stop then you log off.

Welcome to BOINC, Smoke.

BTW, currently you're only show up in the team-stats then you've got credit, in case someone is frantically searching for their account in the team-listings.

RD, you wrote, "5; if you needs to setup proxy, set these before attacking to the project, since otherwise you will attack, can't connect and be kicked out again...

I haven't entered this one yet. I'm not sure what it says. Would you please write it up again with a little more elaboration for I may not understand its meaning.

I was going to put it in like this:

5. If you are using a PROXY, navigate the BOINC GUI to "Settings/Proxy Server ..." and follow the directions there. Make sure you do this before proceeding any further because otherwise you won't be able to connect to complete the installation.

RD, did I understand this correctly?

I've inserted it as "5c." If I've worded it correctly, did I put it in its proper sequence?

Having a problem with this part:

Navigate to the boinc-directory. You could use the following string to get there more quickly: cd "c:\program files\boinc" (if you installed BOINC in the default location)
Once there type in: boinc_cli.exe -install and hit the ENTER key.

All I get is: CreateService failed - the specified service has been marked for deletion. (0x430)

According to the BOINC instructions, you can't install it as a service unless you compile it yourself, so are you sure this is possible?

Bump for Rattledagger to see.

I thought I accepted a question "Do you want to install as a service?" I now think that is in error. I had to move my "DNS2GO" service to another computer a couple of days ago (same day I decided to install BOINC) and that must have been the program I answered the "service" question.

I just did a search of my "SERVICES" and I don't see anything that says BOINC or SETI.

Ah, I see BOINC has put a shortcut in my STARTUP folder. So much for the automatice service install.

So I'll correct some of the comments I made about this (read delete them) and wait for RD or someone else who has installed BOINC as a service to chime in.

Oh, a question... Haven't seen this before.

Anyway, some others has reported installing the service doesn't always work... My only suggestion at this time is make sure you're running as admin then trying to install the service.

Service-install is M2-task, so not always working isn't unexpected. Even the cli at all being included is before schedule. This is the reason the instructions mentions "compile yourself".

As for the service-install actually working, is running as service on NT4 & win2k.
