Setting up 8.2 Sound?

With this rush of AT'ers buying Logitech z560's (4 satalites, 1 sub) keep talking about ordering 2, and getting 8.2 sound. How is this possible? What hardware is necesary? Lastly - can it be accomplished with my Hercules GTXP?

I don't think it's a good idea to buy two for one system. That money is better spent towards one better overall amp/speaker combo, instead of two mediocre sets of speakers

You could quite happily plug 2 sets in using a y-splitter cable. This would give you 8.2 sound, but only in that there are 8 speakers and 2 subs going at the same time. It would still only be 4 channel sound, and the speakers would be doubling up...

Maybe not for computer speakers. But compared to real receivers and speakers they are very mediocre.

these are $115 ! what receiver/speaker setup can you get anywhere near this performance at this price point, or even at the $230 price for two sets?

It's even more pointless to get two sets, which is what this thread is about. You aren't buying any more quality, you are only buying loudness.

That's fine if you want to buy one set, they are a good value that way. But anyone who is going to spend that much money towards two sets of mediocre speakers might as well put that money towards maybe a decent home theater package.

Costco sells a Teac 5.1 home theater system for under 300 dollars. It includes a receiver, 5 satellites and a sub. It sounds great. I'd buy one of those before I bought two sets of computer speakers.

There are currently no 8.2 standards. The only extended standards over 5.1 are 6.1 and 7.1, and even these haven't been really standardized yet. Examples of these standards are the DTS ES Matrix/Discrete, Dolby Digital EX(Matrixed, aka THX EX), Logic7 and Circle Surround. However, no current soundcard can do any of these standards, so its pretty pointless to just get another set and surround yourself in diffused, delocalized sound.
