Hi

My roomate and I are getting cable internet connection. We want to share the internet connection between our two computers.
I've done a little research, and it seems using a router is the best way to do it.

I really don't know much about networking so could you guys recommend me a decent router? nothing too fancy. I'd be nice if it works with linux.

And one more thing, what's the difference between a router and a bridge.

Thanks in advance

Hey Wasert,

I would highly recommend a Linksys Switch + DSL / Cable router (I have a BEFSR81.) This wonderful little box will server internal IP addresses to both of your computers as well as allowing you both to be on the internet at the same time and provide a high speed switched internal network for your computers. The Linksys routers have a very easy to use Web Browser interface, so you will be able to use it with Linux, PC, or any other OS that has a web browser and it connected to the switch.

A router is a device that can route packets (network traffic) between different networks. I.e. it can accept packets from the internet and route them to the computers on your home network.

A bridge is a device that provides communication between two networks that may not be talking the same networking language...

Good luck, I don' t think you can go wrong with a Linksys.

The main difference between the Entry level Cable/DSL Routers is the number, and range of ports that can be open through the Hardware Firewall.

If you are a gamer, and or use applications that need ports opening, it is an issue you have to look at.

You can not go wrong with either of these units.

This week:

Linksys BEFSR41 is available at BestBuy for $50 (after $10 MIR).
Linksys, striking blue.

Barricade 7004VBR is available at J&R for $35 shipped (after $20 MIR);
SMC cheaper, modestly colored grey.

This is even less expensive with a Futurist Look (no printer server).

4-Port Cable/DSL Gateway Router, $20 After Rebate

You can choose by color, price, look.

You connect the cable that came with the modem to the Router's WAN port. You need two straight Cat5 cables, one for each computer.
