Setting up a network? Help

I was attempting to network 4 computers. 3 running Win2k Pro and one running Win98. The problem being that my DSL modem only can be installed under 98 at the time. The manufacturer is going to release Win2k drivers but later this year or early next year. Can I have one of the Win2k boxes control the network but have the Dsl internet connection come in through the 98 box. Is this possible for all computers on the network to use this one connection?

What kind of network are you setting up. 10base-t,100base-t, etc. Also what is the model and type of your dsl router. I also imagine that you are setting up a peer to peer network, so no one computer controls the network.

Yes it will be 100 base-t , peer to peer with one box controling the whole thing. THe Dsl modem is an Alcatel External Usb 4060. Now you have presented another question to me, do I need a router in addition to a hub?

You can use 98 as a proxy for other os's if you want, did they said it wouldn't work cause it was PPPOE or something, or is it a internal modem?

I agree with daniel, use windows 98 as your proxy server. You will not need a router, but you will need a hub. I like WinProxy as a proxy server, it has a firewall built in to the software. You can then set up the Win2K computers to connect thru the proxy server.

DO NOT USE WIN PROXY you will kick youself later, get win98se it has ics (internet connection sharing) which will do it all alone fine, you'll need to put 2 nics in that system one to the hub and one to the dsl device. or you could get a 486 or p 133 system and run a linux router, and on a peer to peer, you really dont need to worry about one of the systems controlling the network unless you want to share files and printers and control access. if you want firewall type protection, you can get a firewall like black ice to go with windows 98se's ics, if you want untouchable protection build a linux box

IF I convert one of the boxes over to Run linux ( I have Redhat 7, Mandrake 7.2 and Caldera EZdesktop 2.4) and I want to control the other Win boxes will that will work. In order to share printers, files and yes control access.

You're the first person I've seen that's said ICS would work for anything. The other responses are pretty much unanimous in saying that it sucks and slows down your throughput.

Thanks for all the post I think I have good Idea of where to go from here. Time to do a little research.
