I'm wanting to set up an ftp so that I can share an anime music video of mine on the internet. At first I was looking around for a free file hosting site, but none of the ones I found would allow storage of a file 35 mb in size. So someone recommended that I try setting up my own ftp using Serv-U. I downloaded it, ran the setup wizard, picked the folder I wanted to be shared and set it to an anonymous account with no password. But now I don't know what I need to do in order for people to have access to it through a browser like IE. I can access it through computers on the campus network by just typing ftp://150.xxx.xxx.xx/ in the address bar, but when I asked a friend of mine to test it (he's not on the campus network, just a dial up) he was unable to access it. I'm guessing there needs to be more to my ftp address, but I don't know what. Adivce will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Since you can get to your FTP server from other on-campus PCs, it doesn't sound like anything is wrong with your PC setup.

Your campus LAN may be running DHCP or NAT. Try to Ping your friend's PC, and find out what IP he sees you as having.

There may be a firewall blocking outside access to the campus' network (and probably is!). That's not something you'll be able (or advised) to bypass.

Hi,

Try changing the FTP-port numer to something else (like 12345) instead of 21.

Here in Belgium, some ISP's block the port numbers under 1000, I don't know about the US.
I had the same problem, but it was solved when I changed the port number
It's worth a try...

Port 12345 would be a *REALLY* bad idea. Especially if warez or something else stupid and illegal were stored there. It would be like using port 31337.

Thanks b4rth3zz

I tried just making up a random 5 digit port number, threw that in there, and it worked!
