What am I missing in this setup? Windows 10.

This used to work. I was having to switch one cable between the printer and headphones amp, but finally got a second USB/USB-C cable and plugged in the headphoe amp.

I also have a second pair of headphones installed that work. I switched back and forth by changing devices in control manager.

I'm not seeing the headphone amp in the control manager devices. What I do see:

- the other pair of headphones; they work.
- 2x "AMD Digitial Display Audio" that show "not plugged in"
- the speaker in the monitor. That works.
- 3x more of the "AMD Didigital Display Audio" no plugged in.
- "Speakers" labelled "Realtek High Definition Audio" showing not plugged in
- "Realtek Digital Sound" that shows it's working - I can select it and see the sound bar moving like it's playing - but I assume this is the onboard sound I have nothing hooked up to.

That's all. When I plug the USB cable for the headphone amp in and out, nothing shows up on the control panel devices.

What you describe tells me that, in Windows Control Panel for Sounds, you do NOT see any audio output device listed for the USB audio system you used to use. You see there only the audio output devices on your mobo (the Realtek system) and your video card (the AMD ... system). I fully expect that, if you go into Device Manager, you will find those two working devices someplace but you will NOT find the USB-connected audio device. You MAY find that item under the list of USB devices with a yellow caution flag to show you it has a problem.

IF it's there with a yellow flag, I suggest you remove it. To do that you probably have to have it plugged in. Then choose that item in Device Manager and choose to Remove that device. NOTE: if that device is shown several times under the USB lists, Remove ALL of them. When that is done, unplug it and reboot the machine. It will boot up and that unit will NOT show up in Device Manager, so you're now ready to r-install it.

On the other hand, if that device already is completely missing from the USB list in Device Manager, you can proceed immediately with re-installation. With the machine running, plug in the USB audio output device. Windows should recognize that a new device has been plugged in and proceed to find and install its required Device Driver. If it does NOT do that, at the top of the Device Manager window find the tool to Scan for New Devices, which will force Windows to look thoroughly at everything attached., and find this device and install its driver.

Once the device is installed with its driver and shows up there with no yelow flag, back out of there. NOW you shuld be able to go to the Sound Manger and find it to choose as the default audio output device.

There are no yellow triangles. You're right that it just doesn't seem to show up - replugging the USB cable has no effect. Scanning for new hardware just redraws the window.

Device manager shows three entries, AMD HD audio, Realtek HD audio, and the other headphones.

It may be that the USB headphone system has failed. Can you try connecting it to another machine to see if it works there? If it does, when you plug it in the new machine host may detect it and install its driver, or at least ask for it. If that all works, be sure to try it our to verify it works on that second machine. Then you'll know whther it has failed.
