Setting up Remote Desktop

Hopefully I can get some help with setting up remote desktop on my WinXP SP1 box. I have it running over my small home network (on a Linksys 4 port router), but cannot figure out how to be able to set it up to connect from outside my home network. What do I need to configure in a) Windows and b) my router to set this up properly?

In your router you need to port forward 3389 to your winXP box. I don't know about Linksys but often the home Nat/routers got a http-based configuration (website).

If you for some reason need to use another port, read here:

For example, if you have more than 1 computer you want to remote from outside. If you use another port, don't forget to specify it in the computer field in remote desktop client. Like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:3389 for the standard port (isn't required to be written) and the 'x' is your external IP.

SafariX--Did you read Aqualize's post? The very first statement gives you what you need to do to the ROUTER to make the COMPUTER accessable from the outside. If you want to make this easier, don't use the router and you will not have the configuration problem. At the same time, nether will anyone else who tries to get to your box...

Control Panel --> System --> Remote tab, check Allow users to connect remotely to this computer. Click Select remote users to choose which users can use this feature. All of them you select must be password protected. The account you are logged into while doing this is automatically included, but you probably need administrator rights to enable this first. after that, just open 3389 and you're good to go.
