I have a Linksys BEFSR41. I need to connect two machines to a cable modem. I set up, get a 192.x.x.x address, and can't connect to any servers.

How would I do this?

What do you mean by "cant connect to any servers"? Are you saing that you can not get on the internet at all on either of the two machines?

You need to set your router to DHCP and also your two computers, unless you have a server you need to have a static IP to. If that's the case, you can set the server IP to 192.168.1.XXX with XXX being something high like 255. If you don't need that, then you just have to setup your router with DHCP and you should be good to go.

The router is at 192.168.1.1 by default. I use DHCP and my machines get IP addresses, but I can't connect to anything.

You need to figure out what the problem is. Hook up the cable modem directly to one of your computers and see if you can get on the internet with that computer. If that works, then the problem is the config of your router. If it doesn't work, then the problem is your cable modem and you will need to call technical support of your cable provider.
Just because you get IPs on your computer doesn't mean everything should work. That just means your router is correctly assigned IPs on the LAN side, but your WAN isn't connecting. If the problem lies in the config of your router, you need to login to it, (Default User ID: Blank, Password: admin), and then look at all the setting required then call your cable provider and ask them for the settings to access the cable modem. Fill in the fields of your router config and try it again.

I can use the cable modem, but not through ther router. I can't ask my cable company, as they "do not support routers."
I'm not certain how it should be configured. The manual pretty much said that the default settings should work.
I've tried DHCP and manual IP's.

You shouldn't have to use any manual IP's. Be sure you have powered off the cable modem then restared it before attaching it to the router. The defaults of routers work 99% of the time, so you need to get into the config and set it back to defaults. If it still does not work call the maker of the router, they will help you configure it.

That is cool you got it working...i have the exact same router. Sometimes with cable modems you have to enter your mac addy in the router config page. Oh i forgot...Linksys has 2 locations for telephone support: Taiwan and India. When i first bought the router i had problems. My isp DNS servers were 192.168.1.34 and the router defualts to 192.168.1.1 and it starts handing out addys with 192.168.1.100....then 192.168.1.101. So you could hazard a guess to why my network was faulty. After realising that i could not communicate with the online support ppl i just did some research and on a Linksys forums page i found relatively the same prob and fixed mine. I live in Canada and most isps where i am from will not support routers either. IF you have any other questions let me know i'll try to help you.
