Setting up the local area network

I want to set up the local area network for the five computers. The host
computer is unable to see anything that means when i click on the network
neighborhood. It says unable to browse the network. Client number 1, sees
the host and itself. Client number 2 see itself and client number 4. Client numnber
3 see itself only. Client number 4 sees itself and client number 2. I checked all
the setting in the network neighborhood properties. It seems everything is fine.
I will appreciate your suggestions

Make sure they all have the same protocol installed, client for MS windows, and make sure they're using the right setting for getting IP addresses.

what version of windows do all of the systems have, and are you using a router or a switch?

Are all the systems using the same subnet? If you try and access the systems by IP address does that work?

I have no idea whether all the systems are using the same subnet. I also donot how I can use IP addresses to see whether they try to acces the system. Please explain me in steps, so that I can see what is going on with computers. Imagine I have little bit idea of networks, since this is my first installation. I hope you understand my problem. Explain me by imagining I am a naive user. I will appreciate your help

sakalloo8248 you would get better answers in the DC forum. If all computers are running Win98 go to each and click Start, Run then winipcfg and click enter. Select the ethernet adapter in the list, write down all the information, also click release/renew and see if any PC hangs. You may need to re-install TCP/IP. We need more info here.

Ok.

Here are the list of steps to follow, then post back with the information.


Information Gathering - 1
1. Click on Start
2. Click on Run
3. Type in WINIPCFG
4. Select the proper network adapter listed from the drop-down arrow menu.
5. Write down in notepad or any text document the information listed. For example, the IP Address, Subnet Mask, etc.


Information Gathering - 2
1. Right-Click on Network Neighborhood on the Desktop
2. Write down in notepad or any text document the information listed. Also write down if "file and printer sharing" is enabled. If you see "TCP/IP - 10/100" listed, click on that and select properties. Write down any information listed in there that looks important.


After you've done those steps, post back with the information you gathered from each of the systems.
