Severe pain in lower right back?

Last week or so I've been waking with severe pain in my lower right back. Not centered at all. It is that spot in the curve of your back above you posterior. It is that spot where you can bend your right arm around and place the palm of your hand on the side of your back. It is a 'sharp' pain.

It is awful when I first wake. I can barely dress. I've been taking ibuprofen up to the max amount every day. I don't have a 'heavy job' and can't remember anything I've done lifting wise. It just suddenly appeared. I can feel it when I breathe, bend, twist. For an hour or two, it is painful just to walk. It goes to a dull 'roar' for most of the rest of the day and it really hurts when I lay 'flat' and stretch.

Ideas. I know I need to see a doc, but I'm just curious what this is. I normally never have pain, etc. . .

sounds like pink eye.

the only cure is decapitating the person who gave it to you.

lower back pain is common among people who sit at a desk all day. If it's both sides you can expect an infection, if its one side then it's probably your posture as you work... do you subconsciously favor one side?

drink more water, get someone that can check for a kidney stone.. they can give you medicine to break it down before you pass it.

In the end you may want to get a better chair, change the way you sit and take a mussel relaxant (just one). Keep in mind that a chiropractor will have a different point of view than a GP. You may do well to go to a DO GP instead of an MD.

that's sciatica.. very common http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S...iagnosis_and_treatment

Is it muscle-achy? (dull pain, strained, sore) It may be DONS (your avg muscle soreness after a heavy workout, goes away 2-3 days)

Or something serious like a tendinitis.

Or if it's a sharp, unnerving piercing pain, then it's a pinched nerve. (goes away after 4-5 days)

If you've had it for awhile then it's something more deep rooted. I constantly have lower right back pain whenever I stress myself due to a mild case of scoliosis.

Go see a doc.

It is sharp. It usually does not radiate down my leg. The most painful position to be in is to lie flat on my back - when I do that I can barely breathe from the pain.

What doc should I see? I hate going to a family prac only to be referred. My insurance lets me go straight to a specialist. . .

Chiropractor worth seeing?

Sounds possibly kidney related. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water atleast.

Definitely not yet. See a practitioner first so he can order blood work to atleast eliminate possible causes.

Since you don't know the cause, go to the family practice. That's what they're for. Or just call and describe your symptoms. Sometimes they can make a diagnosis right on the phone without a physical consultation.

i can't tell if this is a serious post or a joke.

1. wants ATOT to diagnose him to send him to a specialist, instead of calling his real doctor.
2. asks if about which doctor he should see, then asks about a chiropractor.

I'm serious.

Last time I had an ear infection, doc recommended I see an ENT.

When I was having bad pain in my foot, he referred me to a podiatrist.

I'm tired of paying him to say, yep - you are messed up - go see this guy. Might as well cut out the middle man. Which docs deal with backs?

Welcome to the medical system.

You could try looking up an Internal Medicine specialist that's in your plan.

There will always be some people that say, 'don't post about it, see a doctor', but unfortunately antisocial people have the same access to social forums as the others...

From the descriptions I've heard of them, it sounds like a kidney stone. Then again, I am not a doctor and don't know anything.

Unfortuately, there are a lot of things that can cause lower back pain. Pulled muscle, pinched nerve, kidney/bladder infection, cold/flu...

See your doctor, he should be able to sort it out.

(1). I understand that you feel competent enough to triage and evaluate yourself, but you would be surprised how much your PCP does to rule out other possible causes that should be seriously investigated.
(2). In working out common problems, PCPs keep non-medically trained people out of the offices of specialists and thus spare the patients + the health system extra unnecessary time and expense.
(3). It's typically poor form to roll into any specialist's office without any initial work-up and referral from a primary care provider, but you seem to be insistent on doing this on your own. I strongly discourage you from doing that because neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons arent best known for their patience with people who are inappropriately sent to them without prior investigative workup.

Try to have some respect for your PCP. The guy/gal went through at least a decade of school and training to be able to navigate you through your medical problems and help you find a specialist if necessary.

His pcp might suck too...might be time to see another one.

Normally, I like to offer any tips I could think of but in this case I think you should just cut the crap and go see your doctor. I can sympathize with someone without a medical plan or a student with inadequate resources asking for help diagnosing a problem but someone with insurance that let's them "go straight to a specialist" should get off the couch and go utilize the benefits he has instead of wasting time on the Internet when the ailment is "severe" pain.
