Kmart has no one to blame but themselves. They failed to keep with the times with their old rundown stores.

Was this news in the news media? I'd love to pass this info on to the people I know but they'll be wary of it w/out "proof".

Thanks.

Yeah it was in the papers. It's not a widespread thing. KMart is just clearing out of South Bay. They're sticking to the ghetto areas like San Francisco and the East Bay. Kohls is moving in instead.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - All three Kmart stores in the South Bay and another store in Colma will be shut down by March 1, the financially troubled company announced.

The empty spaces will be taken over by Kohl's department stores, according to managers at the soon-to-be shuttered Kmarts.

About 490 full- and part-time employees will lose their jobs, according to Stephen Pagnani, manager of media relations for the Troy, Mich.-based company. The workers were notified of the closings Friday.

Pagnani would not give a reason for the closings, or say whether they had anything to do with declining sales.

"We never break out any individual store-performer information," he said.

Managers said they understood that Kohl's stores were taking over the spaces, but Pagnani would not confirm the news.

"We're not disclosing the buyer," he said. He added that closing the stores "offered us a unique financial opportunity."

Kmart emerged from bankruptcy in May, and has shut 316 stores to save money since then, including two other South Bay stores, one in San Jose and the other in Morgan Hill.

I hope these "sales" are better in the Bay Area than they were here, we've had several Kmarts close around here the last couple of years and they put up all these "50-70% off" signs up everywhere and when we went, even towards the bitter end of the sale, we found crap was marked "50-70%" off of "msrp" or some bogus looking "regular" price, we found next to NOTHING that was really a good deal! It was really maddening and nearly pissed me off, for example we were looking for some baby clothes (well toddler) and there were none there that were cheaper than you normally see/saw in Kmart or see in Wal-Mart every day, t-shirts were $3-7 and that's about average, I'd expect with 50-70% off this would be more like $1-$4 per T but nope no doing. I also looked at patio furniture I wanted and this was a particular unit that I'd looked at before, $279 when I looked at it at Wal-Mart, $289 at the Kmart 50% off sale (WTF!).

Just saying if you go to this pay close attention to whether you're REALLY getting a good deal or not, so far Kmart's "going out of business" sales have been a huge disappointment.
