Yea baby, we signed the best closer on the market. If we had him last year we would have won the west by almost double digits. Next year is looking good for us, eat a fatty Dodger fans.

Umm..you might want to stop hallucinating.

Isn't he the same guy the yankees traded a couple of seasons ago after they traded for him mid season, because he couldn't hack it and the sox pounded him? Or am I thinking of the wrong guy?

His stat line from last year:

47 Saves, 1.29 ERA, .82 WHIP, .152 BAA. Filthy.

don't get too excited. This guy is the worst pressure situation performer ever, and being a Braves fan i've seen my fair share of chokes.

Yeah, that'd be him.

If he plays like he did last year, he'll be good, but he doesn't seem to be able to hack it in pressure situations. There's no guarantee this guy will be as good next year.

I know he has that reputation, but look at his career stats. Point me to a bad year other than his 2nd season:

Giants now own Dodgers

He was sweet last season, only 4 blown saves.
He didn't take too well to pressure when he was in NY despite the good numbers he usually put up. And he is liable to use some bush league tactics (exp. nail a batter in the back after giving up a big bomb, I still remember him pounding Tino in the back).

I'd like to thank the San Francisco Giants for signing Armando Benitez and taking him out of the NL East. Last season he just totally owned the Mets and made them look foolish at the plate (an easy task yes..but he was excellent last season regardless).

He really had no meltdowns last season then again he was in no real pressure packed situations. What will the Marlins do for a closer?? Get Urbina again? He can close for another team since the Tigers have Percival.

A Gagne vs Benitez moment would be sweet to see though.

Sweet, as long as he doesn't go for their head. We blew 28 saves last year, tied for 3rd most in the majors. With Benitez we would have that number reduced by at least 10.

He hasn't really had any BAD years other than the one you pointed out, but over his career you can see he's not as dominant as he was last year. A good pick up for the Giants, I just don't think he's a GREAT closer.

Benitez is a good closer, despite some postseason mess ups. However, he also had some good saves during more stressful times as well. Mets fans are just morons in their hatred towards Benitez. He is a great closer. However, $7 million/year for Benitez? Man, Sabean is a pretty bad GM.

if only Giants had spent money on Worrell last year, they would have made the playoffs. cheaper than Benitez and pretty good too.

He's no Gagne or Rivera or Nathan (why'd we get rid of him??), but he will be someone we can trust in the 9th, and that's huge.

$7 million/year for the best closer on the market, coming off a completely dominant year is overpaying? We paid Rob Nen $9 million last year and he didn't throw one pitch. Anyways, Sabean is one of the best GM's in baseball, so I'll trust his decision making.

the giants wasted more money signing a closer instead of keeping a cheaper JOE NATHAN or TIM WORREL in the previous offseason.

smart.

He was pretty good last year, even beating out Wagner for the Phillies since he was injured for half the fcking year! Although paying him Wagner $$ might not be a wise investment, since he's utterly unpredictable (much like Jorge Julio for the O's).

Yeah, we're all aware of the Joe Nathan deal. I thought it was stupid the second they announced it. But, it's one of the few mistakes Sabean has made and he's correcting it by getting Benitez.

You obviously have no clue how Mets fans felt when he botched up all those important games. He couldn't save the first game in the Subway Series, he had problems with the Braves, Phillies..etc. I still remember Pat Burrell pretty much ending the Mets season a few years ago with a huge homer off of Benitez. He had many memorable meltdowns and thats why Mets fans go ballistic on Benitez. We never questioned his stuff....his stuff is fantastic. He is a good closer for most of the season, but when it COUNTED he melted.

I think letting Worrell go was the biggest mistake Sabean made. Joe Nathan not many people saw him as a closer and in the playoffs for the Giants he was horrible. He surprised a lot of people. It was a good gamble by Minn and it paid off for them. THE BIGGEST mistake the Giants made and several MLB teams made was not going after Vlad. He definitely would have gotten the Giants to the playoffs. and future ones too.
