The patent in question, known as U.S. patent 6,650,327, was filed all the way back in June 1998 and covers a "display system having floating point rasterization and floating point framebuffering."

and no, nvidia won't be sued, because unlike ATi they licenced the technology from SGI.

Its good to know (the former) Ati's business principles are mired as deep in the sewer system as their PR is.

Although i find the news somewhat humourous, your comments are just plain bias.

Anyhow, SGI is pretty much the founders of the GPU industry, and its the ex-SGI engineers who started up companies like 3DFX, nVIDIA, even ArtX which later on was bought by ATi (R300).

For a start, I bet NVidia doesn't own any facilities for BGA inspection. It's prolly the packaging factory doing this under contract to NVidia.

The BGA case is just an opportunistic grab by scanner technologies that will ultimately fall flat on its face. ATi's case is outright theft.

Honestly though, I don't care who sues who or what legalities are dealt with between companies. As long as I, the consumer, get awesome hardware, businesses--whichever ones may be providing the best of what I want--will get my money. If I wanted to deal with that corporate BS I would have applied to work for Nvidia, ATI, Intel, etc. etc. or become a lawyer.

The fact still remains that G80 is almost upon us, R600 is in the oven, and grandma's already reading some recipes for both appetites. Gman needs to get a grip.

Geez, it's one thing to be dorky enough to know everything about computers and consitently game on them (I know, I'm a dork) but to concern yourself with a company that you're not even apart of (or maybe....you are?) and what legal actions they go through all while turning a blind eye towards your favorite vendor is, simply put, stupid.

God, yo ufanatics are pathetic - if the title was "SGI sues nvidia" this would be important news because the credibility and morals of the industry and consumers are at stake.

But because it's ATi, not nvidia in the poo, its obviously a troll post and shouldn't have any attention paid to it.

Reminds me of a few years ago when the fanatics were proclaiming in forums that nvidia should be put out of business for nv30.

Well... one company is out of business in its own right now and it ain't nvidia.

Seriously, what is the big deal? This is what happens in technology daily. Look at Rambus. Look at Intergraph. Look at IBM. Hell, look at Intel for that matter. In the end, something will get licensed. This attempt is just a grab by SGI to stay afloat after emerging out of bankruptcy.

If you want to evangelize how bad one company is for supposed IP theft, then you might as well get out of technology all together, because just about every company is guilty of it the way current IP rules are designed. Just get over it and let the courts straighten out over-zealous lawyers, and in the mean time enjoy the fruits of what competition brings.

To be honest, I wont remember you nor this thread by the time the court has ruled on this matter. It's not really a thing I have to remember for the rest of my life, you know.

However, I still want to point out that you have absolutely no knowledge of the facts behind all this (like everyone else here), yet you seem to think you know ATI is guilty because SGI said so - because you dont like ATI, it has to be true. Pretty sad, actually.
