I hope someone else finds this helpful, this is my first hot deal post , go to Barnes and Noble, www.barnesandnoble.com, and search for Shadow of Hegemon (sequel to Ender's Shadow for all you Ender's fans) then at other format click hardback, it gives a 15 dollar discount for a total of 4.99 + shipping and handling, (about 4 dollars or so) there is a way to get free shipping with the purchase of another book that qualifies (I think any book qualifies). I think this is hot cause normally costs 18 or 19 dollars, it was even cheaper than the paperback version which was at 8. Well Hope someone else is a Ender's fan, a great book for a great series.

another Michael Cricthton Collection (Andromedia Strain, Terminal Man, and Great Train Robbery) - Hardcover for 14.00
Tom Clancy - The Bear and the Dragon - Hardcover for 6.00
Cricthon - Timeline 8.00 (hardcover)

Your post inspired me to check my new favorite book site, overstock.com

They have Shadow for 3.79 and shipping is 1.40 So it may be a better deal if you just want the one book. Pick up Seabiscuit while you are at it for 8.59, its amazing.

They have Ender's Shadow for $4.89 as well. What's up with their Media Mail shipping, though? $1.40 for one book, $2.95 for two (or more)? I guess it's a good deal if you order three or more items, but it doesn't make sense if you only want two items.

The overstock prices are for paperbacks if anyone cares... whereas the original post is for the hardcover.

The hardcover has been on clearance for a while now (2 or 3 months)... I saw the first edition (scraggly cut pages) for $3.00 at the JandR Outlet store in North Carolina.

Yep I love this series, I Shadow Puppets should hit my door any day now.

To anyone reading this thread if not anything else read Ender's Game. It is my all time favorite book, and one of the best Sci-Fi books ever.

Best series ever, I'd pounce all over it if I didn't already have em all in paperback...

Shadow of the hegemon is a great book.

Shadow Puppets on the other hand is by far the worst of the series, worth reading maybe simply to continue the plot, but nothing in comparison to any of the others. Maybe its just me, but this is the first book I have read and found several editing mistakes, and considering its brevity, the errors really mar the experience.

Ender's Game was an excellent book (in high school). The next two were innovative and interesting, and I appreciated them. But the series has been way downhill ever since. And has anyone ever read anything else by Card? I mean, honestly, almost everything he's written sucks. Try reading Philip K. Dick, now there's a writer.

First let me start off by saying that I am a scott card fan. I have read all but a couple of books from the combination of the two sagas and I must agree with shrhaider that the later stories do seem a bit forced at the very least. Almost as if he only planned for a two maybe three book story line. But thats doesn't mean he "sucks" at the very most it makes him a poor planner of story boards.
And everyone knows that Michael Crichton is the one who SUCKS!!!!

IBList is a great place to chat about books. That being said, it's important to differentiate between a planned series and an expanded series.

Ender's Game was originally a stand alone novel and is a stellar sci-fi book. It won both the Hugo and Nebula award in 1986 and it's sequel won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards in 1987. Stands as a landmark book for many reasons. The rest of the series was written based primarily on the success of the first two.

1985 - Ender's Game
1986 - Speaker for the Dead
1991 - Xenocide
1996 - Children of the Mind

Xenocide and Children of the Mind were definitely add ons and while they are worth reading if you enjoy the first two (and want to find out what happens to Ender) they did not bring anything new to the series from my point of view. Children of the Mind did not sell nearly as well as Ender's Game and with that Orson card returned to his "money material" with a renewed focus on the other children.

1999 - Ender's Shadow
2000 - Shadow of the Hegemon
2002 - Shadow Puppets

Ender's Shadow was extremely similar to Ender's Game, in fact it is the same basic plotline told from a different viewpoint. If you enjoyed Ender's Game for this reason it would be hard not to like Ender's Shadow and the following two books are a step or two below but still definitely worth the read.

[Edit- Re:Crichton ->] Just out of curiousity... are you speaking from a perspective of having watched the movies based on his books or from that of having read his books? Most of his books have been turned into movies that fit into the category of "Ok, but not as good as the book."

What movies? AFAIK there is no movie on any of the Ender books, but Ender's Game the movie is currently into production, and should be released 2005 (but I wouldn't keep my fingers crossed they keep pushing back the date).

Actually Ender's Game was a short story, that was first released in Analog magazine in 1977. It was so popular it was nominated for the Hugo, but didn't win. Due to the widespread popularity OSR expanded it into a book. There is a Ender Short Story book out that has the original Ender's Game Short Story, with 3 other Ender related Short Stories.

My quote was in reply to the comment about Michael Crichton, my apologies for not making it clear earlier. As to how it pertains to the original post.. I recommend both collections but not Timeline.

As for the history behind Ender's Game he originally came up with the idea for the Battle Arena in high school. The short story fleshes this out well and certainly without that success there would have been no novel.

Lastly, I'd also recommend the Homecoming series if you have read a lot and are having trouble finding new stuff to read. I didn't like the Alvinmaker series at all.

Some rather old news about the movie from Aint it cool news

Highly dissapointing bit : " A second clause he did not get in was this; the races/nationalities of the children in the battleschool reflect, approximately and proportionally, the races/nationalities of the world. In other words only about 25% white, if that; it is after all a worldwide school, taking only the twenty brightest children, culled from the entire world, about every 3-6 months. He was flat out told "Not a chance in hell. There will be a handful of token characters from other races but every other child will be white." As the studio execs pointed out, if there are too many background characters that aren't white, white people will be afraid to go see it. "

maybe things have changed since then.

I've also seen a rumor about Jake Loyd AKA Manaquin Skywalker being considered for the role of Ender.

Any idea if I have to read Ender's shadow before reading this book in order to enjoy it? I loved Ender's game and was kinda afraid to have it tarnished by subpar sequels but I need something new to read.

Actually Ender's Game was a short story, that was first released in Analog magazine in 1977.
At the risk of nitpicking, I believe it was actually a novella, although it's often called a short story. (I admit, the line between short story and novella can be hazy.)

In any case, I agree that "Ender's Game" is an excellent book. Its immediate sequel, "Speaker for the Dead," is also worth reading. After that, the series fades. It's much like the situation with another SF classic, "Dune," which is a wonderful book, with a good sequel or two, and then a number of disappointing novels.

BTW, Orson Scott Card also wrote "Songmaster," a novel which -- like the Ender series -- incorporates as a key idea the application of psychological pressure and manipulation to gifted children. This novel doesn't get nearly the attention that "Ender's Game" does, but it's not a bad story, and someone who really enjoys "Ender's Game" might care to read "Songmaster."

(I should add that I'm not a big fan of Card, although his "Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus," did get me through part of a 9 hour snow delay at the airport last winter, for which I am properly thankful.)

gimpy, read ender's shadow before you read shadow of hegemon. There are sort of two different stories going on. One mainly around ender (ender's game, childern of the mind, speaker of dead, and xenoxide.) then there is a parallel story with his second in command, bean. Bean's story is told in (ender's shadow, shadow of hegemon, and shadow puppets). Don't skip ender's shadow it is absolutly worth reading. It has the same action packed story as Ender's Game, it is nearly as good. I'm sure you will enjoy it, I couldn't put down ender's shadow. I hear that shadow of hegemon is similar to ender's game and ender's shadow so it should be a fun read as well.

Shouldnt be surprised about this many Ender fans... it was in the top 25 on Amazon's user list of the top 1000 books of the past millennium or whatever..

I had the rare opportunity to hear Card speak when he came to UVA and he is one funny man... and he autographed the entire first series of books for me!
