Shadow on Monitor

Below are the pictures I've taken with my smartphone of my monitor when displaying certain color.

The flaws are not distracting in actual use but I do worry that it will get worse. Can someone tell me what they are, what caused it and if it is feasible to fix it ?

In the old days the entire back of the monitor had entire tube lighting it up.

Todays monitors they use light tubes instead.

Then using light refraction/reflection by way of using plastics to redirect that light.

So you just need to replace your or get a new monitor.


The light tube in that picture above came from a DELL 19" monitor and also suffered from what you mention.

Be specific about type of monitor. My guess is that you have a LCD illuminated by a CFL tube, and that the CFL is a bit weaker on one end than the other. How old is the display? It may be time to replace the CFL tube.

It may be wiser and cheaper in the long run to replace the monitor. Today's LCD monitors are illuminated by LEDs. They provide better light distribution with lower power.

Ah the backlight. Should have guessed. I thought LED backlight would have lasted longer.

This is the monitor, bought in 2011. It has seen heavy usage so I guess it's about time.

I just hope it will hold out for another half a year until the Freesync monitors are available, have been reviewed and gotten a bit cheaper.
