Make sense. Terry Brooks ripped off Tolkien for most of the Shannara series, now they're going to rip off the LOTR series and film in New Zealand.

I guess it was inevitable that someone would try to do a fantasy series. The LOTR/Hobbit movies kicked ass at the box office and GoT is big on TV. I just wish they had picked a different series. Eddings or Feist would have been a better choice.

I don't subscribe to much of the fantasy genre, actually... to any of it. The closest I got to fantasy was The Dark Tower series. I'll watch some fantasy, especially if it has an edge, but I generally could care less about reading extensive fantasy. Oh, and the Dune series, but both have more sci-fi in them and are less reliant on fantasy tropes.

Most fantasy on paper seems so ridiculous to me, the book covers doubly so. And yes, I do judge books by their cover. Marketing is incredibly important.

I read the first one last century and it was so boring it convinced me not to read anything else by the author.

Supposedly the later books are less about making bad Tolkein fanfic. Some people even claim that the series eventually gets good.

Once I got past the first book, I loved the series. At 2:18 in the trailer, there is a brief glimpse of Wil Ohmsford using the Elfstones, and their power scarring him inside. That particular moment sets up many events that follow in later books, and looks similar to what I envisioned when I read it many years ago.

I am completely on board with this show.

Agree, I thought the series was pretty decent

I loved the first book. The rest...sucked.

Elfstones was my favorite. Looking forward to it.

Wow, have not read any of those since I was a kid. I think I only read the first series? Can't really recall looking at the names now though, the first ones are the only ones that really look familiar. Trailer looked pretty cool.

i owned the first book, never managed to read it. bad writing style, and that high fantasy setting didn't help.

tolking somehow managed to make high fantasy seem gritty. but it's not my style.

I thought the Shannara books were awesome back when I was in my early teen years. I have a feeling that's about the level Brooks was shooting for when he wrote them. Trying to read them as an adult might be somewhat disappointing.

Still, I'll probably check this show out if for nothing else than nostalgia.

Terry Brooks actually has some newer ones that are post-apocalyptic which I enjoyed.

Just learned about the TV show version of Shannara...Gough & Millar behind the development and what looks like a sizable budget per episode...if you watch the first few episodes, please leave a quick review! I'll probably watch it after the season as I won't be home much through April.

read the series in jr high in the early 80's.

apparently i remember nothing of the series because i dont remember big ass oil tankers rotting in the wilderness.

and im surprised John Reys-Davis is in it. or actually would be allowed to be in a film so closely related to LOTR/Hobbit.

Checked out the premier last night. I thought it was better in quality than Legend of the Seeker (which I enjoyed).

Seems to be sticking pretty close to the book. The casting seems okay, I wasn't sure how well Crixus would do as Allanon but I think he pulled it off. I'm not really buying Gimli as king of the elves, but maybe that's from him being in LOTR. Most of the rest seem like newcomers (except the guy playing Cephelo I've seen in several things).

Effects are decent quality given the likely limited budget. I'll probably stick with it to see how it goes.
