Shared Printer username/pass

Does anyone know how to make WinXP remember a username and password for a printer? Everytime I print from my laptop I have to use "My Network Places" (or run \\Machine_name) to get to the machine and log in before I can print. I'd like to just have it remember my username/pass and print whenever I want! This process wouldn't work at all I don't think if the print server didn't have any shared folders...

I checked out this post and the included link and that didn't help.

My linux box embeds the username into the SMB share name... I can't seem to do that with XP.

Thanks!!

try setting the printer as your default pinter in the laptop.

I also think you disabled simple file sharing so that paswords or logging in is now required.

I have simple file sharing enabled (by default in xp ) and I dont have to log in when printing from another computer

peace

there might be security issues though with enabling simple file sharing (workplace computer) so beware

I probably should have mentioned that the laptop is running XP, and the print server is running 2000 Pro. I did disable simple sharing because I take this machine to other insecure locations and I've had problems before.

I'd rather not allow access to everyone, but since I am behind a custom firewall I suppose that I could (I had set it up for sharing before the firewall was in place).

Easiest way is to create a user on the 2K box with identical Username and Password to the one you log onto the laptop with.
It's a matter of granting access on the 2K box to the XP user, rather than remembering a password.

Alternatively create a batchfile with the following command in:
NET USE \\%Server%\ipc$ %pass% /user%server%\:%user%

replacing:
%server% with your server's name/IP
%pass% with your password, or a * if you want to be prompted
%user% with the user you log onto the 2K box with.
