Sharing a hotel bed

I'll be traveling for work soon and will happen to be within 3 hours of a friend I haven't seen in almost a year. He's driving down and we plan to hit a bar or two. I told my wife in front of two of her girlfriends and she said "I hope he's not driving home afterwards". I said "Well I requested a rollaway bed or to switch to a room with two queen beds"

They were all shocked we wouldn't just share the king bed for a night. I just laughed and said no. But they really didn't understand why. I mean I don't have any specific fears about it - it's just not something I would do if there were alternatives.

I texted him the comment about sharing a king bed the next day and he responded 'lol no.'

A king bed is pretty big and easily shareable, especially if someone was just going to crash for a night. I'd prefer not having to share a bed, but it wouldn't stop me from offering a good friend a place to sleep after some drinking.

They laughed because men have weird hangups about being close to other men in platonic ways thanks to a culture that pejoratively labeled such activity as "gay".

I prefer my own bed, but wouldn't have a problem sharing one. Depends on what the advantages($) are. $10? I'll pay for my own bed. $20 starts to get interesting. $50 I'll share a bed for sure.

Same reason I see guys at the gym changing into/out clothes in a makeshift towel burka and almost killing themselves in the process I guess.

Except for the old dudes who really DGAF.

.....might I inquire what you would do for $100?
I'd say I'd sleep on the floor, but hotels kinda sketch me out. Who knows what the hell's crawling around on the floor. In all seriousness, for an overnight, I'd rather just sleep in my truck and keep my money. I can pretty much sleep anytime, anywhere. For > a single night, my interest is more in the shower than the bed.

I've done it plenty of times, but in Denmark double beds comes with individual duvets so, it might not feel as intimidating as if you are sharing one.

I've even shared a double bed with a friend in a Japanese love hotel (we didn't know when we booked) which was a really a funny cultural experience

Yes, I would absolutely not recommend sleeping on hotel carpets. I am envious of this ability to sleep anywhere which I definitely do not have.

That is my exact response. In fact, I'll get my own room entirely. I am a light sleeper and not about to endure someones bullshit. Snoring, restless leg syndrome, getting up to pee, whatev; it'll disrupt my sleep.

My attitude, what's it worth to you to have someone hotbox you in middle of the night?
That's another good point. Homie is not blowing up my bathroom. I'll pay for my own room thanks.

It is perhaps illuminating to say I have never been in the military or any other situation where I had to bunk with other men.

Basic is one thing, you've got enough shit going on that makes your life so much worse than just sleeping in a room with 59 other dudes. After that though? I had to share rooms and bathrooms and it SUCKS. Literally everyone is filthy. Everyone. The whole goddamned planet, disgusting.

If you have to share a room, identify the lobby bathroom and set ground rules on No Blowing it up unless its 3am and the hot wings and Hazy IPA's kick in and you literally cant make it...

In the Military I did not share a bed. In Corp America I shared a room, but never a bed.

I'm not about to share a bed with any dude. No thank you!

I have done it a few times when tent camping but it did feel kinda weird and I really prefer my own bed now if I'm going to do that again. One of my friends wants to camp out with me on my property this year before it gets too cold but I told him to bring his own tent and air mattress so we can have our own spaces.

Hotel rooms cost so much money now days though, so I can kinda see making a sacrifice to save money, and just share a room. Could always setup an air mattress on the ground if the room only has one bed too.

Hell I don't even like sharing blankets with my wife. Its not intimidation just that I've gotten used to the pure unadulterated freedom of control over those since we went our separate sheets/blanket ways a decade ago. No more tuck and roll attacks on my part of the blanket, sleep depriving counter offensives to recover sheet territory or midnight foraging for heat retention alternatives

Yeah, it is the norm in Denmark to have individual duvets, also when you live together. I can't remember that I've ever met anyone who shared duvet.

Just put one of those gigantic top pillows between you or see if the hotel has a cot.
